Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning
[01] CILLER TO VISIT AMMAN IN SEPTEMBER
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller will
visit Amman, the Jordanian capital, in September. A statement
from the Foreign Ministry said that Ciller will pay a visit to
Amman at the invitation of the Jordanian Prime Minister, Foreign
and Defence Minister Abdulkerim Kebariti in the first week of
September. Ciller's visit, which was scheduled for the summer,
has been postponed because of operation undergone by King
Huessein of Jordan, the statement added. /Hurriyet/
[02] AKKAN'S SUCCESS
Edirne Deputy from the True Path Party (DYP) Umran Akkan has been
elected Second Chairperson of the Women Parliamentarians'
Organization of Islamic Countries. Pakistani Prime Minister
Benazir Bhutto was elected chairperson of the organization. In
addition to Akkan, Deputy Chairman of the Republican People's
Party (CHP) Oya Arasli, Adana Deputy from the Motherland Party
(ANAP) Imren Aykut and Izmir Deputy from the Democratic Left
Party (DSP) Zerrin Yeniceli attended the conference held in
Malaysia on 29-31 July. /Hurriyet/
[03] ENVER PASHA'S REMAINS TO BE REBURIED IN ISTANBUL
President Suleyman Demirel has ratified a decision for reburying
Enver Pasha's remains in Istanbul. Enver Pasha was killed in 1922
during a military campaign in Tajikistan, but he is also
remembered as one of the leading statesmen of his time. His
remains will now be buried in a state memorial more suitable for
a man who sacrificed everything for his country. /Milliyet/
[04] REPORTS THAT ARMENIA WANTS BORDERS RE-OPENED
There are reports that Armenian parliamentarian and Minister for
Privatization, Telman Ter Petrosyan, has disclosed that Armenia
wants have its borders with Turkey "re-opened as soon as
possible." According to reports, Petrosyan said that both Armenia
and Turkey would benefit from economic developments and renewed
trade.
Describing himself as a businessman, Petrosyan said that Armenia
was ready to build more direct routes to the border in order to
facilitate trade with Turkey. He also spoke about new natural gas
deals with Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] PKK SUFFERS NEW BLOW
In skirmishes between the Turkish security forces and PKK
terrorists in Hakkari, Siirt and Diyarbakir 17 terrorists were
killed and a large amount of ammunition found. Three other
terrorists responsible for bomb explosions in some public
buildings were arrested in operations in Mus, Bitlis and Tunceli.

[06] UN CONTROL TO HABUR AND CEYHAN BORDER GATES
UN specialists will arrive in September and visit in Habur and
Ceyhan to oversee the transportation of Iraqi oil within the
framework of the oil-for-food agreement reached between Iraq and
the UN in May. The UN specialists could possibly bring an end to
diesel transportation by trucks and tankers undertaken by Turkey
despite the UN embargo decision against Iraq taken after the Gulf
War. Ankara has initiated contacts in New York and Washington to
prevent a possible ban on the Turkish fuel transport system so
far overlooked by the UN. /Cumhuriyet/
[07] $60 BILLION LOSS IN SOUTHEAST OF TURKEY
The economy of the southeast region of Turkey has greatly
suffered from the embargo imposed to Iraq by the United Nations
since 1990. Businessmen and industrialists in the region stressed
that the embargo was actually more effective in Turkey rather
than Iraq and claimed that economic problems stemming from the
embargo contributed to an increase in the Kurdistan Workers'
Party (PKK) terrorist attacks. They added that as a result of the
embargo, not only the Iraqi people but also the southeastern
people suffered from hunger shortages.
Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Gaziantep, Mehmet Aslan,
said that the Turkish economy had lost $60 billion since 1990 and
that they would start some democratic activities to announce
their problems to world public opinion. He noted that they would
hold some domocratic demonstrations in order to attract the
attention of the world media like CNN, BBC and ZDF to the region
and that they would form a human chain by from Gaziantep to Habur

[08] "WE CAN SHARE OUR EXPERIENCES IN STRUGGLE AGAINST TERRORISM"
The decisions taken at the end of the meeting of the G7 countries
on 30 July in Paris regarding the struggle against terrorism at
national and international level have been welcomed by Turkey.
Turkey announced that she was ready to share her experiences in
the struggle against terrorism with every country concerned about
the issue. According to a foreign ministry statement on
Wednesday, Turkey was pleased that most of her suggestions put
forward at the Sharm-el Sheikh Summit had been accepted by the G7
countries in Paris. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] APPOINTMENT TO THE DGPI
Aydan Karahan has been appointed as the new General Director of
Press and Information. Before being appinted to his new post,
Karahan was the Ambassador of Turkey to Lefkosa. /Cumhuriyet/
[10] ECSU AGREEMENT RATIFIED
An agreement regarding trade within the scope of the European
Coal and Steel Union (ECSU) Agreement between Turkey and the
European Union (EU) was ratified yesterday by Parliament.
According to the agreement published in the Official Gazette
dated August 1, 1996, the EU will minimize customs taxes on
Turkey's iron-steel products to zero./Cumhuriyet/
[11] PRIVATIZATION OF THE TURKISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RATIFIED
A draft law which foresees the privatization of the Turkish
Telecommunications Corp. was ratified by the General Council of
the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA). Selling procedures
will be conducted by the Privatization Administration; values of
the shares will be decided by the value-determination commissions
by using methods accepted by international finance and capital
markets; selling of the shares will be realised by selling them
to the public, selling in domestic-foreign capital markets, in
the stock exchange and selling to the partners of the investment
