PKK militants were escaping through the border regions to northern Iraq, said officials and added that clashes were continuing and that the PKK had been hit with many casualties. They said they were not able to give the exact numbers of those killed because of the large area in which the operation was taking place. /All Papers/ [02] PM YILMAZ VISITS AZERBAIJANPrime Minister Mesut Yilmaz on Sunday sought closer economic ties between Turkey and Azerbaijan, and called for "sacrifices" for the settlement of its ethnic conflict with Armenia, at the start of an official visit to the oil-rich Caucasus state.Speaking prior to official talks with President Haydar Aliyev, Yilmaz paid tribute to Azerbaijan's progress in democracy highlighted by its first free parliamentary elections. Yilmaz said despite the close relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan, they lagged behind the actual potential. "Azerbaijan should not be content with oil deals and pipeline projects alone. It should attach equal importance to development in every area, and here Turkey is open to every form of cooperation," Yilmaz said, calling for Azerbaijan's support for small and medium-scale Turkish projects. Aliyev said Azerbaijan was ready to extend the widest possible autonomy to the Nagorno Karabakh Armenians on the basis of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity. "We are ready for negotiations within this framework and on this, Turkey is our greatest insurance and support," Aliyev added. /All Papers/ [03] CUTILEIRO'S CONTACTS IN ANKARAJose Cutileiro, the Secretary-General of the Western European Union (WEU), underlined in his contacts in Ankara that Turkey was an important and active associate member of the European defense group. He said: "Turkey does a good a job. It participates actively and is in the planning group. It has the right to veto any decision of the union."Turkish Foreign Minister Emre Gonensay, who received the Secretary-General, said: "Turkey can take the initiative in certain areas. We will discover what role Turkey will play together." Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz also expressed to the Secretary-General the Turkish desire to become a full member. The same issue was raised by President Suleyman Demirel, who responded to Cultileiro's remarks that Turkey was very active in the WEU by saying: "Then why should it not be a full member?" /All Papers/ [04] ARMENIA SIGNALS ITS DESIRE FOR BETTER TIES WITH TURKEYIn response to a message from President Suleyman Demirel to Yerevan, his Armenian counterpart Levon Ter-Petrossian sent his envoy to Ankara over the weekend to underline Armenia's desire to mend fences with Turkey. Jirair Libaridian, the adviser of the Armenian president, said that Armenia would be happy with "any step that would improve relations between Turkey and Armenia." /All Papers/[05] PARLIAMENT TO START BUDGET DEBATE ON WEDNESDAYThe Turkish Parliament will begin debate on the 1996 state budget on Wednesday. The session will end next Monday, April 22.The debate will begin with the budget appropriations for the Parliament. In these rounds, the government and opposition parties will each have 15 minutes speech time. In the final session, the budget as a whole will be voted on. /All Papers/ [06] TURKISH RESERVES RISE TO $ 14.2 BILLIONThe Turkish Central Bank said its foreign currency reserves rose by $ 247 million last week to $ 14.16 billion on April 5, while total reserves increased slightly from $ 15,298 billion to $ 15,545 billion in the same period./All Papers/[07] GETTING CLOSER TO HABITAT IIPaul Van Hanswijck De Jonge, Turkey representative of the United Nations (UN), said the UN had been organising many global summits about environment, human rights, population, social progress and women, and HABITAT II was the last of this chain.De Jonge said that developing the Eastern and Southern Anatolia regions economically and socially to bring them to the level of other regions is as important to the UN as to the Turkish government. "We have agreed to give $4.2 million in aid to the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions", he said. De Jonge called attention to Turkey's economic potential and said it was taking the lead among the developing countries. /All Papers/ [08] TURKISH COMPANY GIVEN ITALIAN AWARDA Turkish company has been awarded the "Italia Che Lavora" Prize, a prize given every year since 1979 to successful companies based in Italy. The Tempo Trading S.R.L. company producing furniture, textiles and textile machines, established by Selcuk and Serdar Aydin, has been awarded for its contributions to the Italian economy. In a speech at the award ceremony, Selcuk Aydin noted that Turkey had become the "tailor of Europe"./Hurriyet/[09] CHAIRMEN OF LEADING STOCK MARKETS MEET IN ISTANBULOn April 17-19, the Istanbul Stock Exchange will host a Working Committee meeting of the Federation of International Stock Exchanges. During the meeting, purchases and sales of stocks on international markets will be discussed. Fifty-two top level officials from 32 leading stock markets will take part in the meeting. /Sabah/[10] CALL FOR AID TO BOSNIAN WOMENMinister of State responsible for the problems of women, Imren Aykut, has called upon women parliamentarians all over the world to urgently help all Bosnian women and children. Imren Aykut led a meeting of the Interparliamentarian Unity (FAB) Women Parliamentarians Coordination Committee in the Ciragan Hotel, Istanbul, yesterday. Having visited Bosnia last week, Aykut gave her impressions about the situation in Bosnia to nearly 130 women parliamentarians from 70 countries. Aykut has undertaken the responsibility for the organization of the aid. Canada gave the first donation. A decision to support and aid all female victims of violence, was also taken. /Hurriyet/[11] VISA AGREEMENT BETWEEN TURKEY AND POLANDThe terms of the visa exemption agreement for Official passports between Turkey and Poland which was signed in 1989 has been broadened. An annex agreement has been approved by the Council of Ministers and came into force after publication of the decision in the Official Gazette yesterday. The annex agreement has lifted bligatory visa regulations for Turkish and Polish citizens whose visits will not last for more than three months. /Hurriyet/ |
