    HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

    BOHLER, LAWYER OF OCALAN: OCALAN MAY COME TO TURKEY
    Beritta Bohler, the Lawyer of Abdullah Ocalan, the chief of the separatist terrorist organization, in Germany, said that her client may come to Turkey. Pointing out that Ocalan is still out of Europe, Bohler stressed that news claiming that the airplane carrying Ocalan attempted to land on Belgium, are not true. Noting that Ocalan seeks for political asylum from a Western European country, Bohler also said that his journey may end in Turkey.

    TURKEY'S BUSINESS VOLUME IN JORDAN: 732 MILLION US DOLLARS
    Economic relations between Turkey and Jordan has improved during the rule of King Hussein who lays unconscious and is kept alive by artificial means after the bone-marrow transplantation failed. Turkish contractors and food companies have undertaken investments in Jordan worth of 732 million US dollars.

    ITALIAN JOURNALISTS VISIT TURKEY
    Six Italian journalists from several Italian tourism magazines, arrived in Istanbul as the guest of VIP Tourism and Turkish Airlines (THY). Stressing that they are angry with the Italian government which alloved Abdullah Ocalan, the chief of separatist terrorist organization to shelter on the Italian territories, the Italian journalists pointed out that their visit to Turkey aims at promoting Turkey's natural and cultural assets to the Italian people.

    A DEADLY GAME IN ANKARA
    Ankara became the arena of the deadly conflict between the U.S. President Bill Clinton and President Saddam Hussein of Iraq. Saddam Hussein has appointed Faruq Hicazi, one of the reliable fellows of Usama bin Ladin who is known as the most dangerous terrorist of the world, as the new Iraqi ambassador to Turkey. Meanwhile the U.S. continues her operations to overthrow Saddam, under the chairmanship of Frank Ricciardone. Ricciardone holds talks with Iraqi opposition groups. Ankara became a stage where the special officials of the two enemies, came together.

    ECEVIT: WE MAINTAIN INVESTMENTS
    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit pointed out that postponement of investments until the general elections on April 18, is not in question. Ecevit stressed that his government want the investments and constructions to be maintained.

    CUMHURIYET (LEFT)

    FOREIGN MINISTER CEM IN THE TRNC
    Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister, paid an one-day work visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and was received by President Rauf Denktas of the TRNC. Speaking at TRNC's Ercan Airport, Cem said the aim of the visit was to congratulate the newly established government in TRNC and to hold contacts to reach the targets on the issue of Cyprus case. Noting that it was known that Greek-Greek Cypriot side have a tendency to use the concept of European Union membership against Turkey and TRNC, Cem said similar-may be more stronger- steps will be taken between Turkey and TRNC to that of Greek Cypriot side will take with the EU. Cem stressed that Greek Cypriot side should not build high hopes.

    THE U.S. SIKORSKY FIRM WINS HELCOPTER TENDER OF TSK
    The U.S. Sikorsky Firm has won helicopter tender which was put out in order to meet the helicopter need of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). The Sikorsy Firm will deliver 50 helicopters until 2001. The helicopters will cost a total of 561.4 million US dollars.

    LORRY SPREADS TERROR ON TEM HIGHWAY KILLING SIX PERSONS
    A lorry collided with a passenger bus, two automobiles and a truck when it crossed the opposite side of the TEM Highway as a result of high speed. A total of six persons were killed at the accident while two others were seriously injured. The injured persons were taken to the Kartal State Hospital for medical treatment.

    THY COMES ON SEVENTH PLACE AMONG THE BEST AIRLINE COMPANIES
    The Turkish Airlines (THY) came on seventh place among the best airline companies of the world. According to the pool of the U.S. ITN Tourism Magazine, the THY has left the British Airways, the Air France, the Lufthansa, the KLM, the TWA, the Continental, the United, the Delta and the Alitalia behind.

    YENİ YÜZYIL (LIBERAL)

    FOREIGN MINISTER CEM: WE WILL FURTHER STRENGTHEN THE TRNC
    Foreign Minister Ismail Cem who paid an one-day official visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said that their primary goal is to strengthen the TRNC. Stressing that joint struggle should be continued in unity and togetherness, Cem pointed out that the target was further strengthening of TRNC in the dimensions of economy and security. Cem noted that the issue of security was vitally important, adding that Greek-Greek Cypriot side formed new dreams and were after making new strategy agreements and in an effort to form a so-called power against Turkey and TRNC.

    TÜRKİYE (RIGHT) A TOTAL OF 37.5 MILLION VOTERS TO ELECT 602 THOUSAND PEOPLE
    A total of 37.5 million voters will elect 550 deputies, 3,215 mayors and 40, 543 headmen in the general election which will be held on April 18, 1999.

    ITALIAN NEWSPAPER PRAISES ATATURK, FOUNDER OF MODERN TURKEY
    The Italian La Stampa Newspaper gave broad place to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, within the scope of its serial named as the ''The Most Important Leaders of the 20th Century''. The newspaper described Ataturk as the person who drew again the Ottoman Empire which was ruined by the wars, by using rifles and compasses.

    ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)

    CEM WARNES
    Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister paid an one-day work visit to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). He was received by President Rauf Denktas of the TRNC. The TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu, Mustafa Akinci, the Deputy Prime Minister of the TRNC, and Tahsin Ertugruloglu, the TRNC Foreign Minister, were also in attendance at the meeting. Addressing the meeting, Cem stressed that Turkey's primary goal is to strengthen the TRNC. Cem also warned the Greek Cypriot side not to build high hopes.

    [02] PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT: - ''WE HAVE COMPROMISED ON THE BANKS LAW'' - ''I BELIEVE THAT IT WILL BE ADOPTED NEXT WEEK''

    ANKARA, Feb 7 (A.A)- Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit met on Saturday with Hikmet Ulugbay, the Deputy Prime Minister, and Zekeriya Temizel, the Finance Minister.

    Addressing the journalists following the meeting, Ecevit pointed out that that they have compromised on the Banks Law, and added,''I believe that it will be brought onto the agenda of the parliament next week and will be adopted.''

    Responding to question about the objections of several political parties over the law, Ecevit said, ''there were objections regarding with several important details, but we have overcome overall disagreements.''

    Ecevit also noted that Ulugbay and Temizel informed him about the contacts with the delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headed by Martin Hardy, the Chief of IMF Turkey Desk, at the meeting.

    [03] ITALIAN NEWSPAPER PRAISES ATATURK, FOUNDER OF MODERN TURKEY

    ROME, Feb 7 (A.A) - The Italian La Stampa Newspaper gave broad place to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, within the framework of its supplement devoted to the ''Most Important Leaders of the 20th Century'', it was reported on Saturday.

    The article underlined that Ataturk is the founder of modern and secular Turkey.

    Pointing out to Ataturk's personal talents and the reforms which he realized for the future of the Turkish people, the article drew attention to Ataturk's efforts to improve Turkish women's place in society.

    Noting that Ataturk who founded Turkey in place of a powerful Ottoman Empire, was a successful leader, the La Stampa emphasized that he was the first leader founding a secular country in the Islamic World.

    The article described Ataturk as the person who drew over again the Ottoman Empire which was ruined by the wars, by using rifles and compasses.

    [04] WORLD BANK DELEGATION DUE IN TURKEY - WORLD BANK TO PROVIDE TURKEY A LOAN WORTH OF 300 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS

    ANKARA, Feb 7 (A.A) - The World Bank will provide Turkey a bank loan worth of 300 million U.S. dollars to support the real sector which faces difficulties stemming from the global crisis, it was reported on Sunday.

    The World Bank delegation will arrive in Ankara tomorrow to hold talks over the bank loan which will be provided within the framework of financial aid programme of 500 million U.S. dollars within scope of the Country Aid Strategy (CAS) of the World Bank.

    The loan which will be used especially for improvement of export sector, is expected to be allocated to the Eximbank, the Turkish Development Bank and the Halkbank.

    Officials stressed that a long-term World Bank loan with low cost is extremly significant in a period of global crisis.

    [05] RELATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY AND IRAN - A COOPERATION PROTOCOL SIGNED BETWEEN TRABZON AND RESHT CITIES

    RESHT, Feb 7 (A.A) - A cooperation protocol was signed between Trabzon Province in the Black Sea Region, and the Iranian town of Resht on Sunday.

    The protocol which was signed by Rahmet Hamidi, the Mayor of Resht, and Asim Aykan, the Mayor of Trabzon, envisages to further improve the social, commercial and cultural cooperation between the two cities.

    The protocol also foresees the exchange of agricultural products, improvement of the tea production technology and development of the cooperation between the tradesmen from both countries.

    [06] KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN PASSES AWAY - FLAGS ARE AT HALF-MAST IN JORDANIAN EMBASSY IN ANKARA

    ANKARA, Feb 7 (A.A) - Flags are at half-mast in the Jordanian Embassy in Ankara after King Hussein of Jordan died from cancer on Sunday.

    King Hussein had returned Jordan two days ago after the bone marrow transplantation in the U.S. failed.

    63-year-old monarch's condition had deteriorated late on Saturday and he had been treated for a sharp fall in his blood pressure.

    Officials at the Jordanian Embassy told the A.A correspondent that a remembrance notebook will be open for King Hussein in coming days.

    An official funeral will take place in Amman on Monday for King Hussein.

    Heads of states and governments from nearly 40 countries are expected to attend the funeral.

    [07] KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN PASSES AWAY - PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT EXPRESSES SORROW ON DEMISE OF KING HUSSEIN

    ANKARA, Feb 7 (A.A) - Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit expressed sorrow on the demise of King Hussein of Jordan who died from cancer on Sunday.

    Describing King Hussein of Jordan as a precious leader who endeavoured for the Middle-east peace process and contributed to the development of Jordan, Ecevit expressed condolences to the Jordanian people who mourn for their King.

    [08] FOREIGN MINISTRY: - ''DEMISE OF KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN IS A SERIOUS LOSS FOR THE WORLD'' - ''PRESIDENT SULEYMAN DEMIREL AND FOREIGN MINISTER ISMAIL CEM WILL ATTEND THE FUNERAL''

    ANKARA, Feb 7 (A.A) - The Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday saying that the demise of King Hussein of Jordan is a serious loss for the whole world.

    President Suleyman Demirel and Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister, will attend the official funeral which will take place in Amman on Monday for King Hussein.

    Describing King Hussein bin Talal as the architect of the modern Jordan, the statement reminded that President Demirel, Hikmet Cetin, the Speaker of the Parliament, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, and Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister, sent messages to their Jordanian counterparts, and expressed condolences to the Jordanian people who mourn for their beloved King.

    The statement also stressed that King Hussein's sincere efforts to further improve the relations between Turkey and Jordan, and his contribution to provide peace and stability in the region will never be forgotten.

    The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Turkey will maintain close friendship relations and cooperation with Jordan towards setting up a peaceful atmosphere in the region during the rule of King Abdullah bin Hussein of Jordan.
