Research position in Computing at City U.Job Opportunities Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>Originally From: Kostas Stathis <kostas@soi.city.ac.uk> Research Fellow/Associate Fixed term for three years Starting salary: £24,193 - £27,273 plus £2,134 London Allowance Research Fellow/Associate to the EU "Global Computing" project SOCS SOCS (Societies of Computees) is a 1,700,000-Euros funded project that is part of the European Union's proactive initiative on Global Computing (see http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fetgc.htm ). Computees are knowledge rich entities exhibiting a number of sophisticated functionalities such as planning, knowledge assimilation, co-operation, co-ordination, communication and negotiation. The aims of the project are to provide computational and logical models and prototype implementations of societies of computees interacting in the context of an open and global environment. Such societies can mirror varieties of human societies, such as trading organisations with emerging patterns of behaviour and responsibilities, or more tightly organised societies such as air-traffic control with predefined roles and obligations and rules of communication. The work in this research project will be carried out in collaboration with Imperial College London, the University of Cyprus, and the Universities of Pisa, Bologna and Ferrara in Italy. The postholder will be responsible for carrying out research and development for building a platform supporting the creation and management of computees, including the way the computees communicate with users and other computees over a computer network. The prototype will be delivered using computational logic and distributed systems technologies. The research fellow will be expected to have a PhD in Computing Science or Engineering or equivalent experience and skills to this level. Programming experience with Prolog and with Internet technologies such as Java or C# is essential. A good understanding of multi- agent systems platforms and technologies as well as the ability to carry out research in distributed systems is required. Knowledge of mobile agents and computational logic would be advantageous. This is an excellent opportunity for somebody who wants to gain experience of international collaborative research. The successful candidate will have regular meetings with project partners in London, Italy and Cyprus, and will have the opportunity to present papers at workshops and conferences in Europe and world-wide. Computing at City University is a rapidly growing department with a thriving research culture. DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTING We are committed to equal opportunities.
