CollegeYear in Athens, a non-profit educational institution based in Athens, Greece is offering an intensive course on Balkan related issues for the summer of 2000. EMS 330, The Balkans: A Challenge for the Euro-Atlantic Alliance, will be taught by Dr. Theodore Couloumbis (professor of International Relations, University of Athens) and Dr. Thanos Veremis (professor of Political History, University of Athens), between June 13th and July 1st (45 academic hours). The course begins with the historic evolution of the region and its peoples leading up to the post-Cold War era and the developments that continue to play an integral role in the region. Attention will be given on specific states' domestic developments, focusing on transition issues of former communist countries to democratic forms of government and market driven economies. The case of Yugoslavia and its dissolution will be examined. The course will conclude by adopting a regional perspective. Various topics will be addressed such as the impact of the region's multicultural/ethnic nature on bilateral and multilateral relations as well as on regional cooperation. Furthermore, the role as well as the attitude of the Balkan peoples towards external actors such as the US, EU and Russia will be examined. Finally, a four-day field trip to northern Greece, which borders with Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria has been scheduled.

Students accepted to the program can maximize their learning experience by combining the Balkans course with any of the nine courses being offered such as Intensive Modern Greek, Ancient Athens in its Living Context and The Ancient City of Athens. Furthermore, apart from the Program's Library, students are welcome to access the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), which owns a substantial collection of literature oriented towards the study of the Balkans.

The College Year in Athens operates under the auspices of The International Center for Hellenic and Mediterranean Studies (DI.K.E.ME.S.). It is a study-abroad program established in 1962 whose academic center and housing facilities are conveniently located in the heart of Athens. DI.K.E.ME.S hosts each semester a good number of students from a variety of North American universities and colleges.
