Eleven Postdoctoral positions in the European Research Training Network "Discrete Random Geometries: from solid state physics to quantum gravity". HPRN-CT-1999-00161

http://www.ma.hw.ac.uk/~des/IHP.html

As part of the current Improving Human Potential (IHP) Research Training Networks (RTN) programme the European Commission will provide three year funding from 1st April 2000 for a collaborative research network dedicated to the analytical and numerical study of discrete random geometries in the contexts of:

Models of quantum gravity

matrix models and 2D quantum gravity, discrete Lorentzian gravity, dynamical triangulations in 3D and 4D, string theory, M(atrix) theory, Regge calculus, QCD string

Solid state physics

spin glasses, ferromagnetic systems with quenched disorder, critical behaviour on random graphs, models of membranes

Discrete mathematics

enumeration of meanders, graph colouring problems, folding problems

The Network will link the following twelve European institutions:

* Heriot-Watt University, Department of Mathematics, Edinburgh, Scotland (co-ordinating partner) * Max-Planck Institut fuer Gravitationsphysik, Golm bei Potsdam, Germany. * National Centre for Scientific Research, Institute of Nuclear Physics, Athens, Greece * University of Barcelona, Departament d'Estructura i Constituents de la Materia, Barcelona, Spain * Universitaet Bielefeld, Fakultaet fuer Physik, Bielefeld, Germany * Jagellonian University, Marian Smoluchowski Institute of Physics, Krakow, Poland * Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark * University of Iceland, Science Institute, Reykjavik, Iceland * University of Oxford, Department of Physics, Theoretical Physics, Oxford, England * Universitaet Leipzig, Institut fuer Theoretische Physik, Leipzig Germany * Universite Paris Sud, Laboratoire de Physique Theorique, Orsay France * CEA Saclay, Service de Physique Theorique, Gif-sur-Yvette, France

(The Jagellonian University will not be offering a postdoctoral position)

ELEVEN POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS ARE FUNDED AS PART OF THE NETWORK.

These network posts start nomimally in Fall 2000, but may be held for any two year period between 1 April 2000 and 31 March 2003, subject to negociation.

The rules of the IHP programme state that network posts are open only to nationals of a European Union country and Associated States different from that in which the post is to be held. Applicants should also be under 36 years of age (though military service and maternity/paternity leave can be taken into consideration), and should not have been resident in the country where they propose to work for more than 18 months in the two years before the start of the post.

Postdoctoral salaries at each institution will be paid in accordance with the local regulations for these positions. Funding will be available for the selected scientists to spend time in network institutes other than their host and to attend workshops funded by the grant and a complementary ESF grant on a similar theme.

Applications should be sent directly to the local co-ordinators at the institutions of interest (addresses below), or more general inquiries can be addressed to the network co-ordinator:

Des Johnston Maths Department, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh EH14 4AS Scotland

des@ma.hw.ac.uk

http://www.ma.hw.ac.uk/~des/

For all the postdoctoral positions, the preferred deadline is 29 February 2000, but applications will be accepted until positions are filled. Applicants should include a full curriculum vitae, a publication list, a summary of current research interests (and an indication of the particular network posts for which they wish to apply if they make a general inquiry). Three letters of reference are required by this same date.
