"ETERNITY AND A DAY" BY THEO ANGELOPOULOS premieres at EU Film Festival on December 1st

"Eternity and a Day" by Theo Angelopoulos, the 1998 Cannes award-winning film, will premiere in Canada on December 1, 2000, as Greece's participation in the European Union Film Festival in Ottawa. The film will also be shown on December 8 at Pacific Cinematheque, concluding the Vancouver EU Film Festival.

This visually spellbinding meditation on time, memory, and mortality by the world renowned Greek director stars Bruno Ganz as Alexander, a writer preparing to leave his home to enter a hospital. Coming upon love letters by his late wife, however, he is instantly ensnared in memories. Then, quite by accident, Alexander meets a boy and decides to help reunite him with his grandmother in Albania. In the face of death, the man of words and the boy embark on a journey.

"Eternity and a Day" also features Isabelle Renauld, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, and Achilleas Skevis. Cinematography is by Giorgos Arvanitis and Andreas Sinanos; music by Eleni Karaindrou; editing by Yannis Tsitsopoulos; costumes by Giorgos Patsas; set by Giorgos Ziakas and Costas Dimitriadis; script by Theo Angelopoulos, in collaboration with Tonino Guerra and Petros Markaris. Produced and directed by Theo Angelopoulos and released in North America by Merchant Ivory, the film has been acclaimed worldwide.

The fifteenth European Union Film Festival, presented in collaboration with the Canadian Film Institute, starts on November 18 and ends on December 2. With English subtitles, films are shown at 7:30 p.m. at the National Archives of Canada Auditorium (395 Wellington). A reception, sponsored by Theo's Restaurant, follows the Greek film.
