MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE INAUGURATES GREEK CINEMA SHOWCASE

Monthly series opens on Friday, December 1, 2000 with screening of Reconstruction, first film by Theo Angeloupoulos

New York, NY -- The Museum of the Moving Image will introduce a new monthly series, Greek Cinema Showcase, with a screening of Theo Angelopoulos's first feature film, Reconstruction, on Friday, December 1, 2000. The series will give audiences the chance to see subtitled prints of Greek movies rarely seen in the United States. The opening film, Reconstruction, was made in 1970, during a period of great political turmoil in which Greece was ruled by a military junta.

In a 1992 interview in the San Francisco Chronicle, Angelopoulos noted, "My first film, Reconstruction, was about a murder that took place in a mountain village. It resembled the classic tale of a father-like Agamemnon-who returned after many years and was killed by his wife and her lover. Through that police story, I gave an image of Greece which was not that of the official government."

The program is presented with Mad Pomegranate Films, an online video distribution company specializing in films from Greece and the Balkans. Mad Pomegranate Films also organizes Greek film programs in the New York area.

The Museum of the Moving Image is the nation's only museum devoted to exploring the art, technique, and history, of movies and television. It is located on the site of the historic Astoria Studios complex.
