  • [01] WINNING BACK SELF-ESTEEM I would have lived without a shred of self-esteem, said the alternate director of the Ministry of the Environment's Land Service Roubini Stathea, who killed herself on Sunday, in the letter to her children, which was published in today's the "NEA" newspa per. Reassurance on her honesty was given by the inspector of the Ministry of Finance, who had undertaken the investigation of claims, after a direction from the General Inspector. His intention to say all he has to say at her funeral was expressed by her

husband, Panagiotis Tzavaras. "Justice will investigate everything", stated Minister of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, Vasso Papandreou.

  • [02] DEEP RIFT IN CHURCH RELATIONS Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos made mention of confusion and misinformation that is intentionally cultivated, even with the mobilization of journalists, in response to the statements of Metropolite of Thessaliotida and Press Spokesperson of the Holy S ynod of the Church of Greece, Theokletos, who expressed the view that only Greeks recognized the ecumenical nature of the Patriarchate. The Ecumenical Patriarch underlined that the ecumenical nature is recognized by all, even by other dogmas, and disagree ment on the issue has only been expressed by the Turkish government, adding that "that will soon be lifted too".
  • [03] DELAY IN MEETING CONFIRMATION Press Spokesperson for the US State Department Richard Bauer denied confirmation or disconfirmation of Colin Powell's visit to Athens next week. Mr. Powell is in Thailand, from where he will travel to Spain for the meeting for Iraq donors. At the present

I cannot confirm any stops along the way, said Mr. Powell. A protest rally has already been announced in Athens.

  • [04] CHRYSOCHOIDIS: THE BRAVEST INCOME POLICY IN THE LAST 20 YEARS The people have the infallible criterion and will give the government what it must, stressed Secretary of PASOK's Central Committee Michalis Chrysochoidis, noting that the government does not chase after polls and will complete its work.

The government is applying the bravest income policy of the last 20 years and it is a paradox for these protests and mobilizations of social groups to exist, he said to "Flash" radio. He added that the government's message is to show solidarity towards t hose in need, but it cannot close on issues that have been pending for decades. The measures of the social package will be put into effect on January 1, 2004, while favorable provisions for petrol will come into effect tomorrow.

He responded to ND, saying that PASOK's MPs are not tired, but those who have been waiting to rule for 20 years, are.

He acknowledged that there are PASOK MPs whose behavior insults the common feeling of public opinion and the people, and he stated that such phenomena will not be permitted.

  • [05] SIMITIS IN BRUSSELS Prime Minister Costas Simitis will participate in the works of the Intergovernmental Convention of the European Council on Thursday and Friday, who is departing for Brussels at 2pm today.

STATHEA'S LETTER TO HER CHILDREN A letter from Roubini Stathea, the alternate director of the Ministry of the Environment's Land Service who committed suicide on Sunday, to her two children, Rhena and Costas, was published in today's the "NEA" newspaper. She asked her children to be res ponsible for everything they do in life, do what is right, get married and give their father grandchildren.

"In five days, when this has all blown over, you will realize that it would not have been good to live with a mother with no self esteem", mentioned Roubini Stathea among other things.

"Thank you for your understanding. Nobody could have stopped me. There was no ship for me. There was not path", she mentioned in a short note addressed to a coworker.

A health bulletin on his condition is going to be issued by the responsible doctors.

  • [09] PROTOPAPAS ON THE RELATIONS OF THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE WITH THE CHURCH OF GREECE Prudence, sense of responsibility and calm should be displayed within the Church to defuse the crisis that erupted between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Church of Greece, stressed Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas.

Mr. Protopapas stated that Athens is being prepared for the meetings but in case something comes up in Mr. Powell's already heavy schedule another place will be found for the meetings or another procedure will be followed for the exchange of views.

Responding to a relevant question, Mr. Protopapas said that Mr. Powell's visit to Greece was not mentioned in the US State Department briefing of the members of the press because it is characterized as a working meeting and not as a formal visit.

The Foreign Minister was also asked about the relations between the Church of Greece and the Ecumenical Patriarchate expressing the government's concern and the need for unity in Orthodoxy.
