[01] HUMAN DEMOLITION
Her wish that the broadening of the unauthorized houses issue not be carried out after it has been through, was expressed in a letter to the "Eleftherotypia" newspaper, by alternate Director of the Cholargos State Land Company Roubini Stathea, who ended
her own life after her name had been in the case of demolition repeals, where she prevented two demolitions with hand written notes of her own. A direction for the broadening was also sent to a civic administration inspector. I will say everything I have
to say in her eulogy, said her husband Panagiotis Tzavaras. The Head of the DA's office gave an order to investigate if the employee had information on repeals of unauthorized buildings.
[02] MINISTERIAL MEETINGS IN ATHENS
Next week there will be consecutive visits, a day apart, to Athens, by Turkish Foreign Minister Agbullah Gul and US Secretary of State Colin Powell. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Panos Beglitis denied that there was a possibility of a three-day Papandreo
u-Powell-Gul meeting in Athens and that the Powell visit is connected to developments in Greek-Turkish relations.
[03] ATHENS-FANARI CLASH
The need for cooperation between the Church of Greece and the Ecumenical Patrarchate was stressed by Deputy Minister of the Press, Tilemachos Chytiris, commenting on the crisis that has broken out between the two sides. The relations between the Ecumenic
al Patriarchate and the Church of Greece are at a crucial turning point, after Vartholomenos' statements from Switzerland that the metropolises of Northern Greece are metropolises of the Ecumenical Throne and Christodoulos' decision not to go to the Fanar
i for a meeting with the Patriarch.
[04] HONORING THE CITY'S MEMORY
The unveiling of a monument dedicated to the Greek Jewish casualties of the 1940-1941 war, will be carried out by President of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos on October 27.
[05] PMDN SATISFACTION WITH ELECTIONS IN ALBANIA
His satisfaction with the Albanian municipal election results for the Human Rights Party (PMDN) -which the Greek minority "Omonia" organization participates in - was expressed in statements to the MPA by the President of the PMDN and "Omonia", MP Vaggeli
s Doule, who condemned the incidents noted in Chimera, where members of the supervisory committee were assaulted.
[06] SIMITIS MESSAGE TO MPS FOR CONSOLIDATION ATTACK ON ND
The consolidation of all PASOK MPS and rush into society was requested by Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who harshly criticized New Democracy and warned social groups demanding satisfaction of their requests that they are overstepping the capabilities of
the economy.
In his speech at the meeting of PASOK's Parliamentary Group, the Prime Minister said that there will be no early elections and that the Movement's statute will be abided, and as it foresees all MPs will be candidates anew.
He recommended self-control, a limitation of introversion and caution not to create breaches and confrontations among PASOK candidates during the pre-election period.
Mr. Simitis attacked ND, stating that its goal is to take over power in order to serve a small group of its own children. In that framework it resorts to a scornful populism and vulgar personal attacks.
Commenting on the recent meeting between Mr. Karamanlis and Mr. Erdogan, the Prime Minister wondered whether the ND President told Mr. Erdogan what he says about the Greek-Turkish friendship and the policies of the Greek and Turkish governments in Greece
.
As far as the claims of the various protesting social groups are concerned, he pointed out that the institutional role of the government is not to grant all requests, but securing what is the best for public interest. The economy has its breaking point,
he warned, and reaching that point will have its self injury as a result. "If we try and achieve convergence overnight, we will lose everything we have achieved", he stated characteristically.
[07] REACTIONS TO SIMITIS SPEECH
New Democracy Spokesperson Thodoris Roussopoulos commented on the speech made by Prime Minister Costas Simitis at the meeting of PASOK's Parliamentary Group today, stating that:
"The claim that Mr. Simitis and PASOK said "yes" to the EEC, is as true as saying that it has adopted rules that are transparent and that judge on merits in governing Greece. Twenty years is a long time for Mr. Simitis to think that all Greeks are still
not on to them".
Mr. Simitis' speech was also commented by the KKE in an announcement made by its press office, in which it underlined that "PASOK has turned political favors, buying consciences, ideological terrorism and blackmail into a science. Its policy is making th
e many poorer and the few richer. Thus, anything said about doing away with discrimination, as was claimed by the Prime Minister, that the government has succeeded in, is mere hypocrisy".
[08] GUSINSKY WILL NOT BE EXTRADITED TO RUSSIA
The Council of Court of Appeals Judges in Athens ruled today against the extradition of Russian tycoon Vladimir Gusinsky to Russia. It ruled that the offenses, on which the extradition request by the Russian authorities was based, are not substantiated.
Vladimir Gusinsky is now free and the 100,000euro bail he posted for his release from Koridallos Prison a month ago will be returned to him.
[09] THE SIAMESE TWINS FROM THESSALONIKI LEAVE THE IC UNIT
The Siamese twins from Thessaloniki will leave the intensive care unit today after the long surgery they underwent for their separation at a Rome hospital two days ago.
The neurosurgeon, who performed the operation, stated in a press conference today that he is very satisfied with the way the health condition of the two baby-girls is developing.
The doctor referred to all the technical details of the surgery and maintained that the operation was a difficult one as the girls were joined at the temple area. The only reservation expressed by the doctor was over the likelihood for the two girls to f
ace vision problems.
[10] MARGINAL GAINS IN THE ASE
Marginal gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.10% at 2.114,75 points, while the volume of transactions "exploded" just before the end of the session reaching 548.9 million euros.
Of the stocks trading today, 181 recorded losses and 103 had gains, while the value of 100 stocks remained unchanged.
[11] THE GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON IRAQ
The European Union has decided to offer economic assistance to help the Iraqi people deal with the immediate problems they face, while the likelihood of a special Greek participation in the effort is being considered, stated Greek government spokesman Ch
ristos Protopapas.
Mr. Protopapas also stressed that the United Nations should undertake Iraq's reconstruction before such a discussion is held.
[12] PROTOPAPAS ON THE CYPRUS ISSUE AND THE VISIT TO ATHENS BY POWELL AND GUL
The Cyprus issue is a requirement and a precondition for Turkey's European course, reiterated today Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas.
Responding to questions on the visits of US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul to Athens next week, Mr. Protopapas stated that there will be no joint meeting of the US, Greek and Turkish sides, adding that Mr. Gul's
visit simply coincided with Mr. Powell's.
[13] THE GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON THE VANDALISMS AT THE JEWISH CEMETERY OF IOANNINA
The government condemns in the most categorical way the vandalisms that took place at the Jewish cemetery in the city of Ioannina, northwestern Greece, stated Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas. He stressed that the phenomena of vandalism in
cemeteries as well as, phenomena of disrespect and desecration of the dead are contemptible.
Mr. Protopapas added that an investigation will be held and those responsible will be led to justice.
[14] THE PRIME MINISTER ADDRESSED PASOK'S PARLIAMENTARY GROUP
Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, addressing the parliamentary group of the governing Socialist Party of PASOK today, responded to those who had characterized as pre-election announcements the Convergence Charter, the development law, and the forestland dra
ft bill on unlicensed constructions.
The Prime Minister underlined that all of the above are the results of the policy followed by the government which will continue its program with new draft laws, such as those on water resources and municipalities' election spending. According to Mr. Sim
itis, the government's intention is to make its work evident in regional areas.
Mr. Simitis characterized as insulting the use of the term "regime" by the right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy and stressed that Greece has democratic procedures and PASOK was the winner of the last elections and still has the people's mand
ate.
He launched an attack on ND on the occasion of the visits made by its leader Kostas Karamanlis to former Soviet Union states reminding that ND had made accusations of election fraud during the past elections involving repatriated Greeks and Greeks living
abroad. He also said that ND is represented in Parliament by deputies who represent major businesses and businesses associated with politics.
On the leading members of PASOK, he said that there is renewal in terms of individuals and policies and underlined that modernization and reform constitute a standing procedure.
[15] THE GREEK PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS MORE SCHOOLS IN UKRAINE
The Greek Parliament, at the initiative of its President Apostolos Kaklamanis, has undertaken since 2002 the adoption of two schools in Mariupol, Ukraine in which the Greek language is being taught.
Based on a new decision by Mr. Kaklamanis five more schools, where the Greek language is also taught, will be adopted in Ukraine and will be supplied with the necessary equipment, and modern teaching devices such as PCs, copy machines, television sets, v
ideo players etc.

[16] KARAMANLIS IN BRUSSELS
President of New Democracy Costas Karamanlis is traveling to Brussels today, in order to participate in the meeting of the European Peoples' Party as its Vice President.
Mr. Karamanlis will bear the message of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan - that his party, the Party of Justice and Development, be added to the ranks of the EPP- to the meeting. This request was expressed during Mr. Karamanlis' recent visit t
o Turkey, where he spoke at the meeting of the Justice and Development Party, and where he met with Mr. Erdogan as Vice President of the EPP.
[17] CRITICAL HOURS FOR THE CONJOINED TWINS
The coming days will be critical to the health of the conjoined twins from Thessaloniki, which were successfully separated after an operation that took place in Rome. The twins are in stable condition and their health is satisfactory, while both the pare
nts and the doctors expressed their hopes that there will be no complications in the next few days. The twins were connected at the temple.
