    [01] PAPAZOI: THE EUROPEAN HISTORY SHOULD NOT BE DISTORTED

    Athens, 30/10/1999 (MPA) Greece reacted strongly to the decision reached by an international symposium held recently in Brussels, based on which a European museum will be founded that will have as a starting point in time the 9th century AD.

    Greek culture minister Elisavet Papazoi will raise the issue in the next council of ministers, pointing out that a distortion of the European history is taking place, as the ancient Greek and the Byzantine civilizations will not be presented in the museum.

    [02] THE NEW CEDEFOP BUILDING IN THESSALONIKI WILL BE INAUGURATED IN NOVEMBER

    Thessaloniki, 30/10/1999 (MPA) The new building of the European Center for the Development of Vocational Training, CEDEFOP, will be inaugurated in Thessaloniki on November 22.

    The inauguration ceremony will be completed with a tour of the formal guests to the new facilities of the center.

    [03] WINTER TIME WILL BE IN EFFECT ON SUNDAY

    Thessaloniki, 30/10/1999 (MPA) Winter time will be in effect on Sunday, October 31. At 4am the clocks will be set back 1 hour to show 3am.

    The winter time will last until March 26, 2000.

    [04] EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 3.7 ON THE RICHTER SCALE IN ATHENS

    Athens, 30/10/1999 (MPA) A weak tremor measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was recorded at 4:54am this morning and came from the same epicenter that gave the big earthquake of September 7 that caused extensive damages in Athens.

    The tremor, that was felt in the Greek capital, is being placed by seismologists within the normal framework of the September 7 aftershock activity.

    [05] GIGANTIC SECURITY OPERATION FOR THE VISIT OF THE US PRESIDENT TO GREECE

    Athens, 30/10/1999 (MPA) The government prepares to launch a gigantic security operation during US president Bill Clinton's visit to Athens.

    According to information, over 10.000 police officers and members of the security forces will be responsible for the safety of the US president.

    Athens, 30/10/1999 (MPA) Moldavian president Petru Lucinski will be on a formal visit to Greece on Monday accompanied by a group of businessmen.

    The Moldavian president is scheduled to visit the Trade and Industry Chambers in Athens and Thessaloniki.

    [07] THE BANK OF GREECE IS LIKELY TO PROCEED WITH NEW INTEREST RATES CUTS

    Athens, 30/10/1999 (MPA) The Bank of Greece is likely to proceed with new interest rates cuts in the following days. Also, Greece is likely to enter the EMU with a harder drachma compared to the central parity of exchange that has been set.

    This likelihood was discussed in the recent meeting of prime minister Kostas Simitis with Bank of Greece governor Loukas Papadimos.

    [08] ON SUNDAY THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN FYROM

    Skopje, 30/10/1999 (MPA) The presidential elections in FYROM will be held on Sunday. The registered voters are estimated to be 1.610.338 and will cast their ballots at 2.973 polling stations.

    According to analysts in Skopje, most favorite to become the successor of Kiro Gligorov are the candidate of the governing VMRO-DPMNE party Boris Trajkovski and the candidate of the Social-democratic Union party Tito Petkovski. The first official results are expected to be announced on Wednesday.

    [09] NEW PAPANDREOU-FISCHER CONTACTS

    Berlin, 30/10/1999 (MPA) The contacts of Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou with his German counterpart Joschka Fischer continued in Berlin today. In their meeting yesterday they discussed issues concerning the European Union Balkan policy, while the issues of Cyprus' EU accession course and the Turkish bid for EU membership will be examined in the following meetings.

    Mr. Fischer stated that the recognition of Turkey's candidature will contribute to the improvement of the Greek-Turkish relations, while he added that the problems of a member-state are problems of the EU as a whole, stressing that the community solidarity principle is in effect.
