    [01] COUNTDOWN BEGINS FOR OLYMPIC AIRWAYS MANAGEMENT

    Athens, 16/05/1999 (MPA) The new manager of Greece's Olympic Airways is expected to be unveiled within the following days, as, according to statements made earlier by Transportation and Communications Minister Tasos Mantelis, the selection process is to wrap up by the end of this month.

    According to persistent rumors, the short-list candidates willing to assume O.A's management are "British Airways"'s subsidiary "Speedwing" and "American Airlines"'s subsidiary "Sabre".

    [02] BSTDB DIRECTORS TO MEET IN THESSALONIKI THIS WEEK

    Thessaloniki, 16/05/1999 (MPA) The Board of Directors of the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank

    (BSTDB) is to meet in Thessaloniki on May 21-22, in order to draw the final touches prior to the financial institution's operation.

    The meeting will concern the BSTDB's latest financial policies which are subject to approval, matters concerning project strategy and investment policies and assessment of risk management.

    While the Bank will embark on full operation mode on the 1st of June, the official inauguration will take place on the 21st of that month.

    The bank's budget, which is expected to be 150 million dollars in 1999, will finance projects and programs funded jointly with other credit organizations, such as the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

    The shareholders of the Black Sea Bank are the 11 member-states of the Black Sea Organization of Economic Cooperation: Greece, Turkey, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Moldavia and Albania.

    [03] EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT ARRIVES IN ATHENS TOMORROW

    Athens, 16/05/1999 (MPA) European Commission President Romano Prodi is to arrive in Athens tomorrow where he will meet with Prime Minister Costas Simitis and opposition party leaders.

    According to reports, Messrs. Prodi and Simitis are expected to discuss selection criteria for the EC's new commissioners.

    [04] GREEK FM PROPOSES TEMPORARY CEASEFIRE IN YUGOSLAVIA

    Athens, 16/05/1999 (MPA) Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou is proposing that a state of temporary ceasefire be applied to Yugoslavia, where NATO forces will stop the bombarding, thus giving the UN Security Council the opportunity to issue a resolution which in turn would have to be responded by Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

    In an interview with the Sunday edition of Eleftherotypia, Mr. Papandreou stated that he will bring forth his proposal during the meeting with his French counterpart Hubert Vedrine, which will be held in Paris tomorrow.

    [05] GREEK PREMIER GIVES HARSH RESPONSE TO DEMIREL

    Thessaloniki, 16/05/1999 (MPA) Greece's Premier Costas Simitis urged Turkey to conform to and abide by international law, warning the Turk President Suleiman Demirel that any opportunist attempt to create tension will fail, stressing that "sovereign rights from Thrace and the Aegean to Cyprus" are not subject to negotiation.

    Mr. Simitis was responding to threatening claims made recently by the Turk President concerning an islet in the Aegean where a Greek couple decided to hold their wedding ceremony.

    [06] NATO VOWS TO PRESS ON WITH BOMBINGS

    Belgrade, 16/05/1999 (MPA) NATO continued to raid Yugoslavia yesterday, focusing on Kosovo where, in a span of 24 hours, more than 100 bombs were dropped on towns and villages.

    Missiles also smashed a fuel tank farm and steel manufacturing plants, thus causing great material damages. NATO's chief commander Gen. Wesley Clark said that the Alliance will press on with the attacks, even if, as he said, the Serbs use the refugees as "human shields".

    [07] YELTSIN WON'T BE IMPEACHED, COMMUNISTS FAIL TO GET 300 VOTES

    Moscow, 16/05/1999 (MPA) Russian President Boris Yeltsin will not be impeached after all, as the State Duma failed to collect the 300 votes needed for his ousting.

    As a result, Mr. Yeltsin officially proposed Sergei Stephashin as a candidate for the premier's post. If the proposal fails to garner the necessary votes in three rounds, then the President will have to declare elections.

    [08] FM ENVOY IS IN CHINA TO DELIVER MESSAGE FROM ATHENS

    Beijing, 16/05/1999 (MPA) Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou has dispatched a special emissary to Beijing in order deliver a message to his Chinese counterpart, Tang Jiaxuan.

    During his stay in China, Mr. Sotiris Mousouris will meet with senior Chinese government and foreign ministry officials with whom he will discuss the need to strengthen diplomatic efforts for a political settlement in Kosovo.
