    [01] TWELVE IRAQI ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WERE ARRESTED IN KOS

    Kos, 02/01/1999 (MPA) Twelve Kurdish illegal immigrants from Iraq, 8 men, 3 women and one child, were arrested at a remote region on the south- eastern Aegean island of Kos last night.

    They are all held at the Coast Guard building in Kos and according to their statements to the Greek authorities, they were brought to the island from the Turkish coasts on board a small boat.

    [02] A CONSTRUCTION WORKER WON 1 BILLION DRACHMAS IN THE CHRISTMAS LOTTERY

    Larisa, 02/01/1999 (MPA) A 60yearold construction worker, father of three children who lives in the central Greek city of Larisa, is the big winner of the first prize in the Christmas lottery that gave him the sum of 1 billion drachmas.

    Two more lucky lottery tickets had been sold in Larisa that gave to each of their owners 250 million drachmas.

    [03] TRAFFIC POLICE WILL TAKE SPECIAL MEASURES FOR THE SAFE RETURN OF HOLIDAY MAKERS

    Thessaloniki, 02/01/1999 (MPA) The Greek traffic police will take special measures tomorrow to facilitate the return of holiday makers as already many people have lost their lives in traffic accidents.

    Since the New Year's Eve 12 people have been killed and 114 have been injured in 85 traffic accidents across the country.

    [04] THE EURO PREMIERS ON MONDAY

    Athens, 02/01/1999 (MPA) The EURO premiers formally on Monday but since yesterday is the currency of the 11 European Union countries participating in the first phase of the monetary union.

    The first transaction based on EUROs will be made tomorrow afternoon with the opening of Australia's financial market. About 50.000 bankers and stock market traders around the world will work feverishly until Monday to make the necessary conversions in EUROs on prices, stocks and bonds.

    According to the exchange rates set in Brussels, 1 EURO corresponds to 353.1 drachmas.

    [05] EDEK HOLDS A CRUCIAL MEETING IN NICOSIA TODAY

    Nicosia, 02/01/1999 (MPA) The Cypriot political party of EDEK central committee holds a crucial meeting in Nicosia today to decide whether it will leave the Cypriot government after the decision by president Glafkos Clerides to cancel the deployment of the Russian S-300 missiles on Cyprus.

    The Greek government has stated that there is no Pangalos-Kranidiotis intervention in the issue of the cancellation of the missiles' installation.

    In Ankara government minister Gurel, responsible for Cyprus issues, stated that the deployment of the S-300 missiles on Crete will change the balance of power in the Aegean and will bring Greece and Turkey against each other.

    [06] THE SON OF A GREEK BUSINESSMAN WAS ABDUCTED FOR RANSOM IN LAUSANNE

    Lausanne, 02/01/1999 (MPA) Twenty six year old lawyer Stefanos Lagonikos, the son of a wealthy Greek businessman who lives permanently in Switzerland, was kidnapped on Christmas eve in Lausanne.

    The kidnappers demanded 1 billion drachmas from the victim's father, Petros Lagonikos, in order to release him and finally they let him go free after receiving 100 million drachmas 48 hours later..

    The Swiss police in a giant operation, in which took part over 100 officers, arrested 8 individuals and the search still goes on for 26yearold Christian Pidu, the mastermind of the abduction, who was a friend of the victim and the son of a government minister. Pidu managed to flee to France and a police operation is underway for his arrest.
