[02] THE NEW YEAR WAS WELCOMED IN GREECE WITH HOLY LITURGIESWeb Posted: 15:59 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 01/01/1999 (MPA) The Greek state and political leadership welcomed the New Year with a Holy Liturgy in the Metropolitan Church of Athens in which officiated Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece. The holy liturgy was attended by president Kostis Stephanopoulos and prime minister Kostas Simitis. The president afterwards received the wishes of political party leaders in the presidential building.In Thessaloniki, a holy liturgy was held in the Church of St. Sophia in the presence of the minister of Macedonia-Thrace and local authorities and afterwards Mr. Magriotis received wishes for the New Year. [03] 1999, THE YEAR OF THE EUROWeb Posted: 15:59 GMT+2Athens, 01/01/1999 (MPA) The first phase of the Economic and Monetary Union is put into effect today in 11 European Union countries.In a special ceremony held in Brussels yesterday in the presence of the national economy and finance ministers of the participating countries the exchange rates were set for the national currencies toward the EURO. The exchange rate for the drachma is 353.10 drachmas for a EURO and will be the same until the year 2001 when Greece will join the EMU, according to minister of national economy Yiannos Papantoniou, who characterized the EMU as a chance for the stabilization of the economy, the cut of interest rates and the creation of new jobs.
