    [01] EVENTS COMMEMORATING THE POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL UPRISING

    The three-day events for the 24th anniversary of the Polytechnic School uprising opened in Athens today. The justice ministry has put in high alert a police force of 3.000 men to guard the building in view of the protest march to the US Embassy on Monday.

    The Polytechnic School was closed yesterday for security reasons, while the university authorities will take any measure necessary to avert incidents on the Polytechnic School campus.

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis and education minister Gerasimos Arsenis laid wreaths at the Polytechnic Monument.

    [02] DRAFT RESOLUTION TO THE US HOUSE ON THE IMIA ISLETS

    Greek American US House Representative Michael Pappas submitted a draft resolution calling the US Congress to officially express the position that the Imia islets in the Aegean belong to Greece.

    The proposal, that was submitted to the US House International Relations Committee, is signed by 20 US House Representatives.

    [03] STRONG EARTHQUAKES IN THE AEGEAN

    A strong earthquake measuring 4,1 on the Richter scale hit the Corinthian Bay in the Peloponnese, central Greece at 10:25 am this morning. No damages were reported.

    Meanwhile, another strong earthquake measuring 5,5 on the Richter scale was recorded at 11:40pm last night and its epicenter was located in the sea region between the eastern Aegean islands of Chios and Lesvos. The tremor was also felt in Athens and no damages were reported to authorities.

    [04] FOREIGN PRESS COMMENTS ON THE SUMMIT OF CRETE AND THE NEW STATE BUDGET

    The British magazine "Foreign Report", in its November 13 issue, congratulates Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis for the Balkan Summit meeting in Crete underlining that Greece managed, without the participation of the Western states and Russia, to bring the prime ministers of the Balkan countries closer. The magazine mentions that even though no difference was resolved, neither in the formal meetings nor in those held on the sidelines, things were not bad for a start.

    It also predicts that in the future there will be more Balkan Summit meetings during which the 8 Balkan leaders will make a honest attempt to improve the situation in their region.

    Meanwhile, the French newspaper "Le Figaro" characterizes the 1998 state budget as strict, stressing that it mirrors Greece's determination to join the European economic and monetary union on January 1, 2001.

    [05] INTERNATIONAL INTEREST IN THE MPA JOURNALISTIC CONFERENCE

    The journalistic conference "Europe and the Mass media: Our Cultural Heritage", that will be held on November 24-25 in Thessaloniki organized by Macedonian Press Agency in cooperation with the Organization Cultural Capital of Europe Thessaloniki '97, has attracted the international attention.

    Among the 100 delegates there are directors and executives of the most important European mass media, while the proceedings of the conference will be covered by correspondents of the three largest news agencies in the world: the Associated Press, the French AFP and the Reuters as well as, the Italian agency ANSA, the newspaper "Corriere della Sera" and the German newspaper "Frankfurter Rundschau".

    Also, the proceedings will be attended by representatives of the UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe and the International Federation of Journalists.

    [06] GREEK TRADE CENTER IN PRISTINA

    The Greek trade center in the capital of Kosovo, Pristina will open its doors in a month. It will occupy a space of 8.000 square meters and will employ 270 people.

    In a press conference for its presentation yesterday, it was announced that initially in the trade center will be represented 35 Greek companies, mainly from northern Greece.

    [07] MECHANICAL FAILURE OF THE AIRPLANE CARRYING THE TURKISH PRIME MINISTER

    The official airplane used for the transportation of the Turkish prime minister had a second mechanical failure this week.

    The airplane took off from the Airport of Istanbul this morning with Turkish prime minister Mesut Yilmaz on board but it returned soon afterwards because of a pressure problem in the passenger cabin.

    Mr.Yilmaz had to use a regular passenger plane of the Turkish airlines to get to his destination.

    [08] MEETING ON ENERGY ISSUES OF 13 BALKAN AND BLACK SEA STATES

    The meeting of energy ministers from Balkan and Black Sea states, that will be held in Bucharest on November 28 at the initiative of Greek EU Commissioner Christos Papoutsis, will be a turning point in the development of energy cooperation between the European Union and the countries of the Black Sea.

    The meeting is organized by the Black Sea energy center in cooperation with the Romanian energy ministry and will be held within the framework of the EU program SYNERGY.

    The main goal of the meeting that will be attended by representatives from 13 countries is to ratify the common political will for the materialization of a number of important energy links among the Black Sea and the south- eastern European states.

    [09] THE 1ST GREEK BUSINESS FAIR WILL OPEN IN SKOPJE IN DECEMBER

    Greek undersecretary of national economy Alexandros Baltas will make the formal inauguration of the 1st Greek Business Fair in Skopje on December 3. The exhibition is organized by Thessaloniki's International Trade Fair- HELEXPO within the framework of its "opening" to the Balkans.

    Among the 150 exhibitors are many of the businessmen who recently presented their products to Odessa, underlining this way the success of the preparatory HELEXPO exhibition in Ukraine.

    [10] CORDOVEZ WILL VISIT NICOSIA, ATHENS AND ANKARA

    UN Secretary-General special adviser for the Cyprus problem Mr.Diego Cordovez will tour Nicosia, Athens and Ankara next week.

    Mr.Cordovez will meet with Cypriot president Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash in Nicosia on Tuesday, while in Athens will have contacts with prime minister Kostas Simitis and foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos.

    During his visit to Turkey he will meet with prime minister Mesut Yilmaz, while he is scheduled to have contacts with EU Commissioner Hans van den Broek in Brussels.

    US White House spokesman Michael McCurry stated that the meeting of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot businessmen in Brussels offered to US presidential envoy Richard Halbrooke an excellent chance to bring in contact people who are working for the future of the Cypriot economy.

    Mr.McCurry characterized the opening of contacts between businessmen from the two communities as a factor that could speed-up the final solution of the Cyprus problem, toward which the US leadership has made a strong diplomatic effort during the past year.

    Commenting on the appointment of Nicolas Burns to the position of the new US Ambassador to Athens, Mr.McCurry stated that the US administration is very pleased over the fact that someone so distinguished and aware of the overall aim of the US foreign policy will be in a position to promote its objectives.

    He said that the new US Ambassador has proven his reliability and effectiveness and has won the respect of the US president.

    [12] PEACEFUL ANTI-OCCUPATION MARCH IN CYPRUS

    A peaceful march and a convoy of Greek Cypriot refugees that ended up at the "Mia Milia" passage in the green line was held in Nicosia this morning.

    It was a symbolic protest by the refugees, who request their return to their homes, and was organized on the occasion of today's anniversary of the declaration of Denktash's pseudo-state in the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus.

    Two jeeps and a few motorcycles broke the police line and entered the neutral zone but after the intervention of the UN peace-keeping forces the young demonstrators were persuaded to follow the prearranged course of the march.
