    [01] THE "GRAY WOLVES" THREATEN THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH

    Trabzon 21 September (MPA)

    Members of the organization "Gray Wolves" in Trabzon and in other Black Sea ports "welcomed" the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew chanting slogans and hurling threats against him.

    The Ecumenical Patriarch together with 250 distinguished international personalities participate in the conference for the protection of the environment which will be completed next Sunday with the arrival of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Thessaloniki.

    [02] NEW PROVOCATION BY ANKARA

    Ankara continues its provocation. After the statements made by Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, general Ismail Hakki Karadayi followed his example and expressed the position that his country must take additional measures to avert the deployment of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles in Cyprus.

    Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis condemned the statements of the Turkish officials and stated that Greece will be on the Cypriot people's side pointing out that Cyprus' defense is a right and a duty for the Cypriot people.

    Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides in an interview today with a Cypriot newspaper, stressed that Nicosia is not willing to delay the arrival of the missiles in the island unless the reasons that led to their purchase cease to exist.

    Meanwhile, in an interview to another Cypriot newspaper the Russian Ambassador to Nicosia stressed that the contract for the purchase of the missiles by Cyprus will be executed as planned and added that Russia will undertake their safe transportation and deployment in the island.

    [03] THE GOVERNMENT POLICY REMAINS UNSWAYED

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis unequivocally stated in the governing party of PASOK Central Committee meeting, which was completed yesterday, that the government will not sway in its policy concerning national issues.

    The Prime Minister attacked the "opposition within the party" and added that the national interest makes it imperative to maintain the policy already followed.

    [04] PRESIDENTIAL AND PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS WERE HELD IN SERBIA TODAY

    Belgrade 21 September (MPA)

    Presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Serbia today and over 7 million voters were called to go to the polls to elect a new government and a new President. In the parliamentary elections participate 91 political parties and their candidates compete for a place in the 250-seat Serb Parliament.

    The country has been divided into 29 constituencies and the parliamentary elections were held based on the system of proportional representation.

    [05] INTENSE DISCUSSIONS IN ALBANIA OVER THE NEED FOR A NEW CONSTITUTION

    Intense discussions are being held in Albania over the need for a new Constitution that will meet the needs of the times and the expressed will of the country's political forces to follow the road toward Europe.

    According to a Tirana television report, a Council of Europe delegation that visited the Albanian capital recently suggested to the Albanians to draw up a Constitution with the biggest possible consensus among the political forces.

    Outlining the positions of the Greek minority Human Rights Party in Albania, its President Vasilis Melos mentioned that the new Constitution is a high priority issue for the country and stressed that the political party leaders should not participate in the Parliamentary Committee that will draw up the draft Constitution.

    [06] EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON SMALL-MEDIUM SIZED BUSINESSES OPENED IN BRUSSELS TODAY

    The importance of small and medium sized businesses in the economic development, as well as the creation of new job positions in Europe and the issue of the single European currency will be discussed in the annual "European Conference on the small-medium sized businesses" which opened in Brussels today.

    Greece is represented by the German-Greek Economic League which recently became a member of the European Association of Small-Medium Sized Business Leagues.

    Among the main speakers will be European Commission President Jacques Santer, Euro-deputies, European Bank senior executives, members of the European Commission, European businessmen and others.

    [07] PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN POLAND TODAY

    Voters in Poland went to the polls today to elect the members of the country's new Parliament.

    According to the exit poll results, the main rivals will be the former Communist left and the right-wing opposition.

    [08] NEW MASSACRE IN ALGERIA

    Algiers 21 September (MPA)

    Fifty two villagers were massacred in Algeria by Muslim fundamentalists.

    The tragic incident occurred in the region Benis Limane, 70 kilometers south of the capital Algiers.

    The international community expressed horror for the crimes committed by the Muslim extremists in their bloody campaign aimed at turning Algeria into an islamic state.
