    [01] THE MEETING OF PASOK'S CENTRAL COMMITTEE CONTINUES

    The Central Committee meeting of the governing party of PASOK continues. Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in his speech today, in the special meeting of the Central Committee on foreign affairs, issued an appeal to all the party officials to work closely together to achieve the national objectives and to form a policy of initiatives.

    Referring to the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, he said that the foreign policy followed by the government aims at strengthening the country's position in order for Turkey to be compelled to respect international law in the Aegean and to reach a viable solution for the Cyprus problem.

    On the Balkan countries, mr.Simitis said that they should not be outside the European developments.

    Finally, he said that Greece supports the struggle of the Cypriot people for freedom and vindication, adding that Greece will assist Cyprus in case of an aggressive attack by Turkey.

    Yesterday, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis spoke of PASOK's re-foundation and stressed that the party seeks the cooperation with all the center-left political forces in view of the local elections next year.

    The spokesman of the opposition party of New Democracy stated that on one hand the Prime Minister boasts about the supposed success of his government, while on the other he criticizes his government officials as being responsible for the inactivity in certain governmental sectors.

    [02] GREVENA AND KOZANI WERE QUIET AFTER YESTERDAY'S EARTHQUAKE

    The cities of Grevena and Kozani in north-western Greece are calm today after yesterday's earthquake that measured 5,3 on the Richter scale. The earthquake's epicenter was located 15 kilometers from the city of Grevena.

    Undersecretary of Environment mr.Verelis arrived in the city yesterday accompanied by special engineers in spite of the fact that no damages were reported in buildings.

    The United States deplored yesterday the new provocative statements made by Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz regarding the deployment of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles in Cyprus.

    In a formal statement of the US State Department, Washington warns Ankara that it is strongly opposed to the Turkish threats for the use of military means in dealing with the missile deployment issue.

    [04] PARLIAMENTARY AND PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN SERBIA TOMORROW

    Presidential and parliamentary elections will be held in Serbia tomorrow. Over 7 million voters will go to the polls to elect a new government and a new President.

    In the parliamentary elections have registered to participate 91 political parties and their candidates compete for a place in the 250-seat Serb Parliament.

    There are 17 candidates for the presidency and if none of them gets over 50% of the votes, there will be a second round of voting in 15 days, between the two candidates who will get the most votes tomorrow.

    [05] THE CYPRUS ISSUE WILL BE DISCUSSED BY CLINTON AND PRIMAKOV

    The Cyprus issue will be among the topics that will be discussed in the United States in the meeting of Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov with US President Bill Clinton and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

    "Radio Moscow" reported that mr.Primakov will have separate meetings with US President Clinton and ms.Albright when he will be in New York for the UN General Assembly meeting.

    [06] HALBROOKE: CYPRUS WILL BECOME AN EU MEMBER

    Cyprus will become an EU member and the accession process will not be interrupted, stated US official Richard Halbrooke. He also announced that a meeting will be held in New York next week between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots.

    Meanwhile, Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash reiterated the threats that if the EU starts the accession negotiations there will be countermeasures. Also, Ankara rejected the EU suggestion for the participation of a Turkish- Cypriot delegation in the talks for Cyprus' accession into the European Union.
