The islets of Imia in the Aegean are presented as Greek in a US Pentagon official map. According to the Greek newspaper "Exousia", the map that was issued by the National Imagery of Mapping Agency, NIMA, on October 6, 1996 refers to the islets with their Greek name, Imia, and there is no mentioning of the Turkish name "Kardak".

A NIMA representative stated that the specific reference to the Greek sovereignty was the result of a US State Department intervention to the Pentagon a few months ago. In an earlier publication of the map, dated January 27, 1996, just three days before the crisis over Imia, the specific islets were characterized with the term indeterminable sovereignty.
