Combat of tax evasion in order to increase state revenues is among the government's short-term targets. The Taxation Office is already carrying out crosschecks of tax data, particularly for some groups of professions where extensive tax evasion has been recorded.

The names of big debtors to the state is expected to be released soon as well as blockage of bank accounts and acceleration of procedures for the collection of arrears.

The Finance Ministry has centered crosschecking of data concerning free-lane professionals, athletes, artists and companies.

There is high possibility of closure of night clubs and shops that are systematic tax evaders.

The European Union was "slow" to react to speculative attacks against Greece and the euro currency, Greek Prime-minister George Papandreou said in an interview with Spanish newspaper "El Paiz", also underlining his determination to implement the measures taken. In the meantime, ECB chief Zean Claude Trichet said the euro was not in danger in response to continuation of speculative attacks threatening stability in the entire euro zone. In the same line was statement by Joseph Stiglitz, winner of Nobel prize in Economics. European Commision President Jose Barroso, who insists on the impact of the crisis on growth, appears more reserved

    G. Papandreou: "Give Time to Greece"

Greek Prime-minister G.Papandreou, in an interview with Spanish newspaper "El Paiz" said the EU had been slow to react to speculators' attacks.

"The EU took time to realize that speculators' attacks on Greece were just a step before attacking other countries and even threatening the stability of the euro zone," G. Papandreou said.

Mr. Papandreou asked to be given time to proceed to the necessary reforms and ruled out restructuring of debts.

He also blamed the former conservative government for mismanagement, extensive tax evasion and corruption.

"We have taken some very difficult decisions," he said. "We had to adopt these emergency measures due to pressure from the market, and demonstrate that we are determined" said G. Papandreou.

Zean Claude Trichet: "The Euro Is not in Danger"

The euro is not in danger and remains a credible currency. It is the fiscal policy of some countries that needs to be addressed. What I want to see is a united EU front and some credible austerity measures needed by some member states to clean up their state finances. This will strengthen the euro zone as a whole", said ECB chief Zean Claude Trichet.

On his part undersecretary for Economics, Filippos Sahinidis said that Greece is paying for its lost credibility due to mistaken political selections, adding that additional measures would not be necessary if the government's moves continue to bear fruit.
