    Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis is meeting Tuesday with House Speaker Dimitris Sioufas. During the opening meeting of the ruling party's electoral committee, Kostas Karamanlis said that the battle has to be won and it will be won, further adding that the opposition PASOK party has to submit its proposals.

    Karamanlis' Agenda

    With regard to Karamanlis' pre-election agenda, the Prime Minister will start his tours from the Egaelo district in Athens, where he will address a party event on Wednesday afternoon.

    Talks on Candidacies Continue

    In the meantime, the political parties are expected to release the first names of their candidates.

    According to information, the Prime Minister wishes to see his party's ballot papers renewed. He has already been given a list with at least 50 news nominees.

    Alexis Tsipras arrived Tuesday in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. In the aftermath of the recent developments with regard to SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left), the movement's leadership is battling against time to cover the lost ground.

    Head of SYRIZA's parliamentary group Alekos Alavanos said he would not run for the 4 October general elections, following the comprise achieved, whereby no one was chosen to lead the party to the elections.

    LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) head Giorgos Karatzaferis did not rule out the candidacies of agent Ilias Psinakis and veteran football player Giorgos Anatolakis. In the Press conference he gave Monday on the sidelines of the Thessaloniki International Fair, Karatzaferis expressed his conviction that no political party would be able to form an independent government.

    Touching on his party's candidacies, the LAOS President said: âI'm looking for people who will lure into politics those who have turned their back to politics. I turned to certain people. I have not yet reached any conclusions. We will see. However, my message is to bring in new faces.â

    [04] Polls Give Socialists the Lead

    The recent polls carried out have suggested that none of the two mainstream political parties (ND and PASOK) will manage to form an independent government after the 4 October general elections. PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) enjoys a steady lead over the Conservative New Democracy party, with the gap ranging from 5.4% to 6.1%. Polls have showed that five political parties will manage to earn their place in the next House, with SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) gaining the 3% threshold.

    Survey by GPO

    The survey conducted by GPO for MEGA television gave the Socialists a 5.5% lead over the ruling Conservatives.

    In particular, ND garnered 26.5%, PASOK received 32%, KKE (Greek Communist Party) got 6.8%, SYRIZA gained 3.6%, LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) got 6.2% and the Greens 2.7%.

    As for who is the most appropriate to tackle the financial crisis, 35% of the respondent gave a positive rating to Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, as opposed to 33% of those surveyed who opted for George Papandreou.

    Survey by Metron Analysis

    The Metron Analysis survey carried out on behalf of ANT1 private television gave the Socialists a 6.1% lead.

    In particular, PASOK received 35.7% and ND got 29.6%. KKE trailed with 6.3%, LAOS with 4.6% and SYRIZA with 4%.

    As for who is the most appropriate for the premiership, Kostas Karamanlis landed first place earning 34%. George Papandreou trailed with 33%.

    [05] Bi-Ministerial Committee Holds Meeting

    Political parties are feverishly working to draw up their ballot papers ahead of the 4 October general elections. The Bi-ministerial committee is holding a meeting to decide upon the terms and conditions of the televised campaign of the candidates and the parties, the election funding and spending.

    Candidates have until 16 September to submit their candidacies, while parties have until 21 September to announce their candidates.

    [06] âCalm Vigilanceâ to Address H1N1 Cases

    Experts have suggested that up to 1500 Greeks die of the common flu annually. The H1N1 flu virus, however, is feared to claim as many as 3,000 Greeks. Although this is an extreme scenario, it is also possible.

    The H1N1 flu is expected to test the resilience of the Greek National Health System and cause huge stress to the hospital personnel. Therefore, âcalm vigilanceâ has been advised. The first doses of the pandemic vaccine are expected in Greece in the coming week. In the meantime, the head of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control stressed that the first results on the vaccine's safety and effectiveness are due out. But, even if its effectiveness is proved, the pandemic vaccine is not a magic solution. Prevention measures and cemented health systems are the ones that will put a brake on the surge of H1N1 infections.
