  • [01] ND's Central Electoral Committee Holding Meeting

Last Updated on Monday, 07 September 2009 17:47

The Central Electoral Committee of the ruling New Democracy party is currently holding a meeting amidst succession scenarios. Although the party leader has not yet revealed his intentions with regard to the party's nominations, the party officials who were involved in cases that hurt the government are estimated to be excluded from the ballot paper.

Aiming to pick the party's candidates, the Central Electoral Committee of the ruling party is holding a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis.

At the press conference he gave Sunday in Thessaloniki, the Greek Premier appeared determined to exclude from the party's ballot paper those involved in scandals.

[02] Aleka Papariga Says No to Coalitions

    ÊÊÅ

Greek Communist leader Aleka Papariga expressed her objections to independent governments, stressing yet again that the two mainstream parties, those of ND and PASOK, will implement exactly the same policy. She also blasted the rest opposition parties, claiming that they only thing that they will succeed in is stealing votes from the two major rivals.

Touching on the opposition parties, Papariga underlined that they only thing SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left), LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) and the Greens will succeed in is to steal votes from ND (New Democracy) and PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement). However, she added, this is part of the planning orchestrated by the ruling class.

Finally, commenting on coalition scenarios, she stressed yet again that the Greek Communist Party does not wish to have any relation with such scenarios.

Alekos Alavanos, head of SYRIZA's (Coalition of the Radical Left) parliamentary group, announced Monday his decision to abstain from the 4 October general elections. âWe want him to be at the front line, just like all our officials,â commented SYN President Alexis Tsipras. In the meantime, the SYRIZA secretariat accepted the decision of the SYN's Central Political Committee, whereby there will be no one to lead the ballot paper in the elections.

    [05] LAOS President at TIF

None of the two mainstream political parties will manage to form an independent government in the forthcoming general elections, commented LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) President Giorgos Karatzaferis in his Press conference at the 74th Thessaloniki International Fair. He then voiced his conviction that ND and PASOK will manage to strike common ground. Karatzaferis took a stand in favour of coalitions on the day after, arguing that his party will cooperate with those that agree with his principles.

Touching on economy, Giorgos Karatzaferis said that Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis cannot put the blame on the PASOK governments, because he failed to fix what the Simitis administration left behind.

With regard to the measures unveiled by the Prime Minister at the 74th Thessaloniki International Fair, the LAOS head stressed that if they take effect, they will âdryâ the market.

Commenting on national affairs, he blasted the Greek government for being submissive, saying that Turkey imposed âco-dominanceâ in the Aegean, with its jets flying wherever and whenever they want, while Skopje âtookâ the name Macedonia.

The man expected to become Japan's next prime minister said Monday his government will follow through on a campaign pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020.

It is a more aggressive goal than the previous administration's. In June, Prime Minister Taro Aso announced a plan to cut emissions by 15 percent by 2020, compared to 2005 levels.

"Japan's change in government will bring a major shift to our climate change policies, through international negotiations for the future of human society, and I want to begin in a way that is said to have made a major contribution," Yukio Hatoyama said at an environmental forum in Tokyo.

Last Updated on Sunday, 06 September 2009 20:27

Public spending, tax evasion and reforms comprise the interventions Kostas Karamanlis is planning so that the Greek economy gets solid foundations for a long-term growth. Among the measures heralded for the year 2010 are a freeze in hirings, income and pension in the public sector, cuts in over-time work, spending and harsher criteria for the administration of invalidity pension.

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis referred to the need for measures capable of addressing the structural problems of the Greek economy.

âMany will be annoyed, but we have to proceed with tough policies and we have the political will to do so,â said Karamanlis, further adding, âUnless the measures are taken, the price will be even stiffer.â
