  • [01] PASOK's Economic Priorities

    News

PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) President George Papandreou unveiled his party's priorities regarding the country's economy in his article in Kosmos tou Ependyti paper. Papandreou put the blame for the sluggish economy on the ruling party of ND (Nea Dimokratia). On Friday, opposition leader blasted the government for its economic policy, claiming that the budget had derailed.

Papandreou gave priority to a prompt recovery plan through raising public investments and boosting liquidity in the market.

He also placed emphasis on ways to tackle unemployment and fair redistribution that will benefit the low-income earners. He then suggested a middle-term fiscal consolidation programme with a view to wisely managing public wealth, and finally a new mechanism monitoring the market.

âWe do not make promises that we cannot keep. But we will not limit our ambitions. Because it is time for a better governance. It is time for major changes and reforms,â stressed George Papandreou.

    [02] Greece Confirms 20 New H1N1 Infections

Twenty new H1N1 infections were confirmed Saturday in Greece, raising the total number of the swine flu cases to 242. Of them, 110 have been fully cured. Infections are estimated to surge in autumn, with experts forecasting that 33% of the population will probably go down with the swine flu. The rising number of H1N1 infections has been blamed on the fact we are in the middle of the tourism period, as well as on local spread. In any case, symptoms are mild.

    Of the twenty new cases:

⢠11 came from nations that have confirmed H1N1 cases,⢠four came in touch with already infected people, and ⢠five, whose contacts are under investigation.

The Greek Health Ministry stressed that all health agencies are on standby to address new infections.
