[01] OECD Sees Greek Economy Recovering in 21010

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revised upwards its forecast on world economy for the first time in two years. Estimating that recovery is on the way, it stressed it will be weak and fragile and that social and financial repercussions will not be avoided. OECD head Angel Gurria said that economic figures echo a moderate optimism but everyone should remain on alert.

The Paris-based organization said it expects its member countries' economies to shrink by 4.1 percent this year, with only government rescue measures heading off an even worse decline. It forecast, yet, a return to growth in all three regions next year, with overall growth across its membership expected to average 0.7 percent in 2010.

Although the financial turmoil hit almost simultaneously, the speed of an economic rebound will vary across the globe, said Gurria.

With regard to unemployment, the OECD forecast it will stand at 8.5 per cent in 2009 and soar to 9.8 per cent in 2010.

OECD sees Greek GDP shrinking in '09

The Greek economy is expected to shrink by 1.3 percent this year and grow by 0.3 pct in 2010, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said in its six-month "Economic Outlook" report on the Greek economy.

The Paris-based orgranisation also projected that Greek inflation will total 1.3 pct this year, rising slightly to 1.7 pct in 2010, while the country's fiscal deficit would total 6.1 pct of GDP in 2009, and 6.7 pct of GDP in 2010.

[02] Meeting on Illegal Emigration

In the meantime, Aleka Papariga, secretary general of the Greek Communist Party (KKE), is unveiling her party's position on the matter. She opposes the creation of emigrants' camps as she brands them and suggests the creation of decent host places. She accuses the government of finding allies in PASOK and attacks LA.OS regarding its poisonous campaign as she brands it, while as far as SYRIZA proposals are concerned she stresses that the coalition of the radical left nourishes disillusions because solutions can not be found within the framework of the European Union.

[03] Reactions and Concern over El. Typos Shut Down

In the meantime, general assembly of the employees at Eleftheros Typos paper and City radio station issued a resolution reading: âWe believe that the surprise decision to have the newspapers and the radio station shut down by liquidating the two companies is illegal. We are demanding their re-opening. Our goal and demand is that no development for the day after can exist without the participation of the employees. We are requesting a meeting with the Ministers of Finance, Employment and Press to search for a solution.â

On Friday, the general assembly of Eleftheros Typos and CITY radio station employees' administrative board will convene to discuss further actions. Employees demand the re opening of the newspapers as well as the radio station.

At the same time, reactions by political parties are intense. Governmental spokesman stressed today that the Prime Minister was not aware about this business decision.

Minister of Environment, Giorgos Souflias said that this is a very unpleasant event and underlined that "newspapers bear an important mission to the parliamentary democracy". As per all the employees that are left unemployed the minister underlined that when a business is shut down, there are laws that protect all unemployed. When asked if a domino phenomenon is going to follow, he answered: "Press in Greece is indeed going through a crisis but I am not competent to say if developments in"Eleftheros Typos" will trigger a domino effect.

President of SYrIZA parliamentary group Alekos Alavanos said that the government should take immediate measures for employees of "Elftheros Typros". Alavanos also stressed that a profiteering scenery prevails in the country and submitted a series of proposals for immediate and long-term measures.

[04] No Flights on Thursday Morning

The employees have financial and institutional grievances and are opposing the violation of air traffic rules from illegal radio amateurs.

Travellers are advised to contact their air line to see if their flight is going to be cancelled or rescheduled.
