  • [01] Political Turmoil Continues in Iran

    News

The political turmoil in Iran keeps going strong, after the 12 June presidential election. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, who has led massive protests over what he says was a rigged election that returned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power, claimed that 25 journalists and employees working in pro-Mousavi newspaper Kalemeh Sabz were seized on Monday.

Authorities in Iran have suspended the operation of the said newspaper, while the state-run media are constantly blasting Mousavi. In the meantime, the Tehran regime has raised obstacles in the work of the foreign correspondents sent in the Asian nation to cover the elections. Greek-British journalist Jason Athanasiades, who works for Washington Times was arrested on Tuesday, while BBC's permanent correspondent in Tehran was kicked off the country.

And one defeated candidate, former Revolutionary Guards chief Mohsen Rezai, has withdrawn his protest about election irregularities. "(Iran's) political, social and security situation has entered a sensitive and decisive phase, which is more important than the election," Rezai said in a letter on Tuesday to the Guardians Council, the top election body.
