Paying tribute to the policeman who was killed in the line of duty, the Public Order Minister cancelled the meeting scheduled to take place on matters pertaining to public order. The government said it will demonstrate zero tolerance to criminal actions that deliver a crushing blow to society and Democracy itself. PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) held the Interior Minister accountable and demanded heads roll.The Government Strongly Condemned the Criminal Act âAny democratic thinking citizen- the total Greek society- strongly condemns the use of any form of violence. No tolerance, no alibi, no extenuation for criminal acts that snuff out lives, turn against society and against democracyâ, stressed government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros. He also said that authorities are already looking into the case so the culprits will face justice. Mr. Antonaros disengaged the incident from the New Acropolis Museum grand opening and underlined that Greece was a safe country for the millions of tourists and the prominent personalities invited to attend the inauguration ceremony. Security authorities are doing their duty and the best thing to do when such incidents occur is to leave them do their job and not express claims that have no relation to reality. The government spokesman said that there was no question about political responsibilities or change of Police leadership as sense of responsibility, particularly in emergency situations where there is need for effective coordinated actions, demand that those appointed by the Prime-minister remain in their posts. On his part ND party secretary, Lefteris Zagoritis also strongly condemned the cowardly murder and terrorist attack and underlined that all thinking Greeks and the total Greek society stand against the murderers. PASOK launched strong criticism against the government while its leader George Papandreou called an extraordinary meeting on public security and terrorism issues. PASOK deputy Haris Kastanidis, competent on domestic issues, called for the resignation of the Interior Ministry leadership, adding that the government does not respond to its obligations to the citizens and stands indifferent to PASOK proposals. Anna Diamantopoulou spoke of dissolution of the antiterrorist service. Another PASOK deputy Mihalis Hrisohoidis said that the country has unfortunately entered into a circle of violence, blood and crime and there was need for great efforts to arrest the criminals. The GCP said that the Greek people should think who are benefitted from these acts and who take advantage of them to justify enforcement of security mechanisms. SYN president, A. Tsipras expressed his grief and abhorrence for the murder of the policeman in Ano Patissia. LAOS president G. Karatzaferis stressed among others that there were more and more frequent murders of policemen during ND party ruling compared against any other period adding that indicated tolerance implies accessory and moral perpetration. The US ambassador to Athens Daniel Speckhard expressed his condolescence to the family of the victim. All members of the Greek Parliament condemned the criminal act. The Speaker of the House Dimitris Sioufas expressed his grief and abhorrence and described the murder attack as an attack against democracy. Tsipras said that yet another year, Greece's forests are at the mercy of trespassers, arsonists and inclement weather conditions. He blasted the government for failing to step up the measures that should have been stepped up after the devastating wildfires of 2007 and for failing to make the necessary institutional changes that would make forest protection more effective.SYN, said Tsipras, has long before submitted its proposals for the necessary creation of a single forest protection body, for the abolishment of the ineffective laws, for the clear determination protection of forest land, for the promotion of institutional provisions capable of protecting the reforestation campaign. Suffering slight injuries, the woman was hurried to hospital.Police are investigating the type of the explosive device, while, according to flash information, the hit is put down to personal disputes. Source: NET 105.8, ANA/MPA News item: 23745 [04] Street Protests Continue in IranNewsDefying Iran's clerical regime, which said it would recount the disputed ballots from the presidential election, the supporters of reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi have scheduled new street protests in central Tehran for Wednesday afternoon. Mousavi has not yet said anything about the new rallies. US President Barack Obama said Tuesday evening that the gap between the Iranian President and his rival are not as big as it is thought to be, adding the Iranian regime has always been hostile to the USA. In the meantime, high-profile supporters of Mousavi are believed to have been arrested, including an academic and an economist. Iran's Information Minister said Tuesday that about 26 people that masterminded the clashes in Tehran were arrested. Source: ANA/MPA, AFP, Reuters News item: 23698 [05] Blast in Indonesia Mine Kills DozensNewsThe death toll from a massive explosion in an Indonesian coal mine rose to 27 with around a dozen men still trapped and feared dead deep underground, officials said. Rescuers pulled another 10 bodies from deep within the mine in West Sumatra province, which collapsed after an explosion of methane gas on Tuesday, health ministry crisis centre head Rustam Pakaya told AFP. "The bodies were found inside the mine around 150 metres down," Pakaya said. The accident left nine people injured in hospital, while around a dozen were believed to be still trapped underground, provincial disaster management chief Ade Edward said. "There's a large chance that they're already dead because there's a lot of carbon dioxide there," he said. The blast at the mine in Sawah Lunto district sent flames 50 metres into the air and left a huge crater on the surface, officials have said. Miners were using traditional methods with few modern safety measures in place. Accidents are common at Indonesian mines, especially at illegal digs with no safety precautions, industry sources said.
