  • [01] Euro-Parliament: Progress Report on FYROM

The European Parliament demands that FYROM's (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) accession process to the EU to be accelerated. "Although the name issue constitutes a basic abeyance, bilateral issues should not prevent the accession negotiations from beginning," points out the third progress report of Skopje's accession negotiations, which had been approved by the European Parliament. The report was voted down by the Greek Euro Deputies. FYROM and almost all of its political parties hailed the progress report.

    Report on Turkey

At the same time, according to a relevant report voted through by the majority in the European Parliament, Turkey's progress report states that the above country does not fulfills the terms regarding Turkey's occupation army in Cyprus, social reforms and the freedom of expression, which constitute obstacle for its accession to the EU. For the first time, the report calls Ankara to secure the rights of Greeks living in Imvros and Tenedos. Turkey is also asked to withdraw its troops from Cyprus, answer on the missing Greek-Cypriot soldiers, retract casus belli and allow the re-opening of the Theological School of Chalki.

[02] Germany: in the Aftermath of the Tragedy

The police have made announcements on the tragic attack to the school in Winnenden, Germany. According to them, the culprit, who killed 15 persons, may not have warned about his action. Originally, it had been announced by the Interior Minister of Baden-Wuerttemberg state that the 17-year-old culprit had informed a person in a chat forum on the Internet that he was planning to assassinate students of his former school because they had made fun of him.

However, investigations proved that the information was false, as no such information was found in his computer. Yesterday, it was announced that the culprit was under psychiatric observation as he suffered from depression.

Today, the police corodoned off a school in south-western Germany after a warning was issued on the Internet that a violent action was being planned there. The school is being searched.
