  • [01] Measures in Support of Tourism

    Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has announced a series of measures in support of tourist enterprises amid the global financial crisis. Amongst others there will be a 50% increase of expenses, aimed at promoting Greece, a drop of the unified tax of property for 2009-2010, while loans taken by tourist enterprises from Banks will be suspended for one year. In parallel, they will be financed within the framework of the programme aimed at boosting liquidity in the economy.

    Moreover, the security fund will fully subsidize interests up to 350,000 euros for new enterprises that will get involved with tourism, while the contribution of law 128, passed in 1975 will be suspended for one year.On a social and labour level, the seasonal unemployment benefit will be transformed to an employment benefit, while social tourism offers will increase.

    The PM committed himself that the government is ready to assume additional initiatives, provided the tourist sector requires support.Unfortunately, some behave as political leaders and also as tourists, pointed out LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally).

    [02] Farmers' Rallies

    Larissa farmers are suspending their rallies and are gradually withdrawing from Girtoni intersection. However, they stated they will continue with their rally on 16 January if their demands are not met. Meanwhile, Serres farmers will continue with their rallies and block streets. At 12:00, they will block for an indefinite time Srimonas intersection near Kerdyilia, Egnatia Motorway, the old Thessaloniki-Drama national road and the road to Promachonas (Greek-Bulgarian border) on Petritsi intersection. Future mobilizations will depend on the results of the meeting among Rural Development Minister Alexandros Kontos, farmer representatives and Serres Prefect Stefanos Fotiadis, due to be held today.
