    New Wildfires

A wildfire that broke out in Aspropyrgos, Attica, in the early hours of Wednesday is burning out of control, reducing to ashes warehouses, industrial plants, containers, gipsys shanties, and bushes near built-up areas. The really strong winds blowing in the area are hampering the firefighters efforts to put down the fire. Some 30 fire engines, 90 firefighters and two helicopters are operating in the area. In the meantime, the blazes that broke out Tuesday near the central Greek city of Oinoi have not yet been contained. The Civil Protection Authority has issued a fire warning.

Oil prices have rebounded, after the record fall they recorded Tuesday in New York. In Asian trading, crude oil for August delivery was up by 22 cents to $138.96 per barrel. Brent gained 33 cents, standing at $139.08 per barrel. Oil prices lost Tuesday more than $6 per barrel in New York, the biggest dive recorded in 17 years, as analysts saw energy consumption in the USA going down, due to the ongoing the US economy slowdown. Crude oil even fell by $10 at some point of the trading. Chairman of the US Federal Reserve Bank Ben Bernanke said before the Congress that no important growth is expected by the end of the year.

Prisoner Swap at the Israeli-Lebanese Border

    16 Ιουλ 2008 10:47:0

Hezbollah handed over the bodies of the two Israeli soldiers abducted in Lebanon in 2006 to the International Committee of the Red Cross, as part of the prisoner swap agreed with Israel, a Hezbollah official said.

"Despite the war launched against us, we hand over today Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev," said Hezbollah security official Wafik Safa, with the coffins of the two Israeli soldiers lying before him.

Red Cross officials checked the coffins inside a tent at the border with Lebanon, before giving them to their colleagues in Israel, added Safa.

Soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were abducted on 26 July 2006 in Israel along its border with Lebanon. Their capture sparked a 34-day war that claimed 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and 160 Israelis.

Among the Lebanese prisoners to be released is Samir Qantar, a Palestinian senior militant, who was sentenced to 547 years in jail in 1980.

Qantar was sentenced for killing an Israeli civilian and his daughter, as well as a police officer to the north of Israel.

The rest to be released are four members of the groups armed wing. Under the swap deal, Hezbollah has to give intelligence on Ron Arad, an Israeli pilot who was reported missing in Lebanon in 1986.

Olmert dismissed the report Hezbollah gave Monday on the matter as "insufficient." The report said that Arad is not alive, however, it has no precise information on its luck.

Ron Arad is a hero in Israel, which never quitted on him and refuses to officially report his death, although army officials think that he is no longer alive.
