  • [01] US bombing kills six civilians in Afghanistan

    At least six Afghan civilians were killed and seven wounded in a U.S. air-strike in Afghanistans central province of Uruzgan today. In other violence overnight, three militants were killed when several dozen suspected Taliban and al Qaeda fighters attacked government forces near a U.S. military base in Paktika province close to the Pakistani border. In another incident, a U.S. helicopter launched an attack inside Pakistans North Waziristan region on Friday night, killing one person and wounding three. Finally a suspected senior al Qaeda member whom the Pakistani army thought it had surrounded in a remote area on the Afghan border is probably a Chechen or Uzbek militant leader, according to a Pakistani commander today.

    DIKKI party president, Dimitris Tsovolas announced the suspension of his partys operations noting that his party would not be participating in June's Euro-elections.

    [03] Roof prepaprations at Olympic Aquatic Centre suspended

    At the request of the IOC, the Greek Government and ATHOC have reviewed the construction plans for the roof of the swimming pool, at the Olympic Aquatic Centre (OAKA) arriving at the conclusion that, due to delayed planning, the timely completion of the roof was not guaranteed and could jeopardise the running of the competitions.

    [04] NATO reopens Kosovo road as violence abates

    NATO-led peacekeepers reopened a major road in Kosovo today in a sign of returning calm after three days of violence in which majority Albanians torched Serb houses and churches. Serbia-Montenegros top defence body called today for the countrys «urgent» inclusion in NATOs Partnership for Peace program, saying that it would help stabilize the situation in Kosovo and elsewhere in the region. The Supreme Defence Council, which includes top officials and security commanders, convened late Friday for the second time since the ethnic violence erupted Wednesday in Kosovo. In a statement issued today, the defence council said it was monitoring the situation in Kosovo closely and taking unspecified «active measures.»

    [05] Peace rallies staged in Athens and other major cities in Greece and abroad

    Today marks the one-year anniversary from the military invasion of Iraq by the US and allied forces. Anti-war rallies were organized all over the world mainly demanding the termination of the countrys occupation and condemning terrorism. Thousands of demonstrators staged a peace march to the US embassy in Athens today where marchers condemned the continuing presence of troops in Iraq in a day of action arranged by the global and European Social Forum and coordinated by local groups.

    [06] New government announces policy statements

    The new governments objectives were announced from the Parliaments podium by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, during the presentation of the program statements, together with the vision for a new dynamic Greece, which will develop dynamically in all regions, creating more jobs and distributing the fruits of development more equally to all. The new government today pledged to lower unemployment, boost productivity, overhaul taxation and improve the economy's competitiveness.

    Mostly sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country, with scattered clouds in the west and some early morning mist. Winds southwesterly, light to moderate. Temperatures in Athens will range between 10-24 C and in Thessaloniki from 7-23 C.
