  • [01] European parliament president to attend Euro-Mediterranean Assembly in Athens

    The president of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, is scheduled to arrive in Athens tomorrow, to participate in the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, to be held on Monday and Tuesday. Also participating in the sessions will be presidents, vice-presidents and members of EU parliaments, as well as of 10 southern and eastern Mediterranean countries. The opening of the sessions will be announced by the Greek speaker of parliament, Anna Psarouda-Benaki

    [02] New parliament opens tomorrow with government's policy statements

    Parliamentary sessions officially open tomorrow with the governments policy statements. During the 3-day debate which will conclude on Monday midnight with a roll-call vote of confidence - Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will outline the framework of his ruling policy for the country.

    In the meantime, Anna Psarouda-Benaki was elected as parliamentary speaker today the first time that a woman has undertaken the post.

    [03] Greek PM will attend Switzerland talks says ND's honorary president

    The ruling New Democracy partys honorary president, Constantine Mitsotakis, said today that the Greek prime minister supported the case of Cyprus, as did all the Greek parties. Speaking at Larnaca airport, on his arrival in Cyprus for a private visit, Mitsotakis said that since Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had announced he would participate in the Switzerland talks, it was inconceivable that the Greek prime minister would not go.

    [04] Greek Cypriots to attend Swiss talks, but Denktash refuses

    Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos will attend a crucial round of expanded negotiations on resolving Cyprus' division in Switzerland next week, an official in Nicosia said today. However, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is harshly critical of the UN reunification plan, currently under discussion, a has categorically refused to attend the Swiss talks.

    [05] Kosovo events close to "ethnic cleansing" says NATO commander

    A senior NATO commander said today that Kosovo Albanian attacks on Serb villages this week were not far from turning into "ethnic cleansing". Close to 1,000 Serbs living in isolated villages among the majority Albanian communities in Kosovo have fled in the last three days, as houses and churches were torched by Albanians, despite a heavy presence of international peacekeepers.

    [06] EU to appoint special terrorism coordinator

    An emergency meeting of the European Union Justice and Internal Affairs ministers today concluded with a proposal for the appointment of a special coordinator for terrorism issues. The meeting was called to chart a central European strategy for dealing with international terrorism. The coordinator will act within the context of the Council of Ministers and will report o Xavier Solana, the EUs commissioner for common foreign policy and security.

    A mainly fine and warm day is forecast, with some cloudy patches in the western and northern parts of the country.Temperatures in Athens will range from 12 to 24 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 9 to 23 degrees.
