Meanwhile, the Italian EU presidency announced that attending the summit will also be the Foreign Ministers of Israel and Palestine.(2/12/2003 8:20:00 μμ) [03] Concerns over Islamists in Bosnia-HerzegovinaGreek police authorities are expressing concerns over information about the existence of two thousand Islamist fanatics in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The issue is closely related to the security of the Olympic Games and will be tabled tomorrow during a meeting at the Maximos Mansion under Prime Minister Costas Simitis. Attending the meeting will be the leader of the Greek Police, Fotis Nasiakos, Foreign Minister, Giorgos Papandreou and the Ministers of Defense, Culture and Public Order.(2/12/2003 8:18:00 μμ) [04] 6.5 billion euro for Greek countryside development programsCredit for completed development programs for the Greek countryside will reach 6,5 billion euro according to PM Simitis today during a biminesterial meeting at the Maximos Mansion. Mr. Simitis added that 500 development programs are presently underway in the country aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens residing in the countryside. The PM also underlined that according to the government's agricultural policies over the past two years, agricultural incomes have increased by 13,8%.(2/12/2003 8:22:00 μμ) [05] Education draft law causes political turmoilA draft law tabled by New Democracy European MP Kostas Hatzidakis at the EU Parliament that would force Greece to recognize degrees issued by private educational institutes as the equivalent of university diplomas stirred up a political storm in Athens.Minister of Education P. Efthymiou did not rule out an appeal to the European Court and claimed ND was attempting to legalize certificates issued by companies that are operating under franchising deals with foreign universities. ND's Hatzidakis who made the proposal, pointed out that it is not an ideological issue, but a case that may cause Greece problems, even at the degree of the European Court. Government spokesman Christos Protopapas accused the ND party of keeping a double agenda, and described the proposal by Hadzidakis as 'an illicit trade in hope' and 'an attempt to devalue the degrees and work rights of millions of (Greek state) university graduates.' (2/12/2003 8:26:00 μμ) [07] Olympic flights resume, strike continues...Management at 'Olympic Airways' announced that all 96 scheduled flights from Athens' International Airport are going to be held tomorrow, in spite of the decision reached by the company air hostesses and flight attendants, who have announced a new 48hour strike.The management's decision to file lawsuits against the airline employees, who continued to be on strike in spite of the fact that it was declared illegal, caused the reaction of their union, which announced a new mobilization of its members until Friday. Flights will be conducted with seasonal flight attendants and crew members from Macedonian and Olympic Aviation along with three aircraft and crew members from foreign airlines that have been chartered by Olympic. (2/12/2003 8:28:00 μμ) [08] Aznar rejects pullout as Spain mourns Iraq deadPrime Minister Jose Maria Aznar on Tuesday ruled out withdrawing Spain's forces from Iraq, only hours after a state funeral for seven Spanish intelligence agents killed in an attack near Baghdad.Meanwhile, the U.S. military denied reports that Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the most wanted man in Iraq after Saddam Hussein and alleged mastermind of guerrilla resistance, had been captured in a raid today. Confusion surrounded the outcome of a large-scale operation by U.S. troops and Iraqi police near the northern city of Kirkuk, still under way after nightfall tonight. Earlier Iraq's Governing Council said Ibrahim, a man with a $10 million price on his head, had been either seized or killed in the raid. U.S. officials at first had no comment, but then late in the day said they were not holding Ibrahim. (2/12/2003 8:33:00 μμ) [09] U.S. warns of terror threat in Saudi Arabia, KenyaBritish anti-terror police arrested 14 people today as the United States warned of possible attacks in Saudi Arabia and Kenya, in actions which highlighted a persistent global threat to Western interests. In Riyadh, where suspected al Qaeda bombers killed at least 18 people last month, the U.S. and British embassies said more attacks may be planned after authorities foiled a massive car bombing one week ago.U.S. and German authorities also warned their nationals to stay away from the centre of the Kenyan capital Nairobi over the next few days in response to "indications of a terror threat".
