    [05] AIDS

[06] in developing countries need ARV treatment urgently to stay alive and healthy, but only between 300,000 and 400,000 are getting the costly drugs. The U.N. plan aims to get ARV treatment to half the six million people by the end of 2005.

Estimates released by UNAIDS last week showed deaths and new cases reached unprecedented levels in 2003 and were set to rise further as the epidemic maintains its deadly grip on sub-Saharan Africa and spreads across Eastern Europe and Asia. AIDS will have killed about three million people this year. Five million more will have been infected.

In Greece, the Ministry of Health reports that the number of AIDS cases is much smaller than the EU average with 37 new cases reported per one million people while the EU average number of cases is 65. In his message for World Aids Day, Health Minister, Kostas Stefanis pointed out prevention and information are the two most vital factors in confronting the disease.

[12] U.S. quizzes EU on defence plan

The United States quizzed European allies today on moves to set up an independent EU military planning cell, but avoided a showdown over an ambition it had previously blasted as "the most serious threat to NATO". Tension over the tentative deal on defense arrangements for an enlarged European Union was only a minor distraction as alliance defence ministers sought to shore up the credibility of a drive to expand NATO's peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.

NATO Secretary-General George Robertson announced that allies had offered six helicopters for the 5,700-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, where there are currently just three. But these actually comprised three German helicopters already there, which Berlin has offered to keep on beyond schedule, and an as-yet unconfirmed three from the Netherlands.
