    A partly cloudy day is forecast, with showers and local storms in the western, central and northern parts of the country.

    Amidst a wave of strikes by groups in the public sector ' calling for salary increases, higher than those offered by the government ' the new state budget for 2004 will be tabled in parliament tomorrow.

    At the Intergovernmental Conference in Rome ' where European Union leaders failed to bridge their differences over the proposed new EU constitution ' Prime Minister Costas Simitis said today he was in favour of accepting the draft text without major changes.

    [04] Britain to agree to return of Parthenon Marbles?

    According to an exclusive report in the British newspaper, the "Sunday Mirror," the British Heritage Secretary is prepared to agree to the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece, in exchange for Athens' support for London's bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012.

    [05] Meeting scheduled between PM and Archbishop Christodoulos

    In the absence of unforeseen circumstances, Prime Minister Costas Simitis will meet with the head of the Greek church, Archbishop Christodoulos on October 24, according to reliable sources cited by NET radio. The meeting is awaited with special interest, as it has been pending for the past two years.

    [06] Israel conducts air raid on targets in Syria

    Israel launched its deepest air raid into Syria in 30 years today, attacking what it claimed was a training camp for Palestinian militants, after a suicide bomber killed 19 people in an Israeli restaurant. The UN Security Council called an urgent session at Syria's request, after receiving a letter from Damascus describing the attack as a "grave escalation" of Middle East tensions.

    Rebel Chechnya voted for a new president today, in polls denounced by separatists as a sham, but seen by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a major step in anchoring the war-devastated region.

    A senior Iranian officials said today that Tehran would do what it could by an October 31 deadline, to allay international fears that it may be developing atomic arms.
