During a press conference in Rome on the conference's sidelines, Prime Minister Simitis requested the acceptance of the planned new constitution without major changes. The Greek PM added however that clarifications and improvements should be made since the EU requires a new form of operation following its enlargement.Meanwhile Italian riot police clashed with anti-globalisation protesters during a demonstration against today's summit in Rome today, leaving several demonstrators injured. Earlier today several thousand demonstrators had marched through a southern district of Rome to protest against the summit. More than 7,000 police were on the streets and helicopters hovered overhead, monitoring the crowds. University professors are insisting to continue their mobilizations demanding a 30% increase in their basic salaries despite the fact that the government decided to give universities 19 million euro.In further mobilizations, striking on Monday will be grade school and middle school teachers, hospital doctors and local administration employees. Police officers, coast guard employees and firefighters have also announced mobilizations. The attack on the eve of the Yom Kippur fast day was likely to increase public pressure on Israel's government to remove Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, despite an appeal by his prime minister-designate for attacks on civilians to end. Some feared the election board could cancel the results or call for a limited redistribution of parliamentary seats.(4/10/2003 8:40:00 μμ) [09] Two killed as unemployed soldiers riot in IraqTwo Iraqis were killed today in violent confrontations between hundreds of former soldiers in Saddam Hussein's disbanded army and occupying troops in Baghdad and the southern city of Basra.
