    [02] Greece sends condolences for Anna Lindh's death

    Condolences were sent to the Swedish government today, following the murder in Stockholm of the 46-year-old Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh, who was stabbed by an unidentified attacker yesterday. Prime Minister Costas Simitis said Anna Lindh was a real European personality, who greatly contributed to European Union development and couragously served her country.

    [03] Condolences sent on September 11 anniversary

    On the 2nd anniversary of September 11, the Greek government has conveyed its condolences for the victims of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington in 2001. Government spokesman Christos Protopappas said it was an exceptionally tragic day for the American people and for humanity in general.

    [04] Cyprus deal would aid Turkey's EU chances says Papandreou

    Turkey's chances of starting EU entry talks would be boosted if there were a deal on Cyprus before the divided island joins the European club next May, Foreign Minister George Papandreou said today at a press conference in Nicosia. He added that progress on bilateral disputes and the Cyprus issue would be weighed up by Brussels, when it reviews Turkey's European Union candidacy in December 2004, with a view for setting a date for accession talks.

    [05] Turkish-Cypriot court convicts, but releases, 3 Greeks

    A Turkish-Cypriot court today released three Greek nationals, after convicting them of entering the Turkish-occupied northern sector of the island without proper documentation. The three men were placed on one year's probation.

    [06] Opposition parties reiterate criticism of Convergence Charter

    Opposition parties continued to voice their criticism of the government's so-called "Convergence Charter" ' announced by Prime Minister Costas Simitis yesterday ' saying the economic data was not realistic and the promises made would not be kept. The measures aim to effect a rise in Greek living standards, to bring them up to those enjoyed by other major European Union countries.

    [07] Israel to ask army to draw up Arafat expulsion plan

    Israel's security cabinet agreed in principle today that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat should be exile, but opted against any move to expel him immediately. The cabinet decided to ask the army to prepare a plan for Arafat's removal from the region, but decided against immediate expulsion because of US opposition.
