[03] Opposition parties react strongly to Convergence Charter

All of the country's opposition parties strongly reacted to the Prime Ministers announcements today. The leader of the ND party, Konstantinos Karamanlis characterised Mr. Simitis as untrustworthy claiming he and the government are making the same promises as in 2000.

The Greek Communist Party's general secretary, Aleka Papariga stated the convergence charter nothing more than a continuation of anti-popular policies while the president of the DIKKI party, Dimitris Tsovolas pointed out the PM did nothing more than make pre-electoral fireworks.

[04] Foreign minister G. Papandreou in Cyprus

A new momentum is being created for the solution of the Cyprus problem, stated Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou upon his arrival to Cyprus this afternoon, pointing out that the non-solution of the Cyprus problem is not a solution.

At Larnaca Airport, where he was welcomed by his Cypriot counterpart Giorgos Iakovou, Mr. Papandreou stated the future could now be faced with different self-confidence because a different situation is being experienced.

Mr. Papandreou pointed out that beyond the solution of the Cyprus problem, another major priority is the future of Cyprus within the EU, and underlined Cyprus would play an important regional role in the European Union.

Later today, the Greek Foreign Minister will meet with Cypriot president, Tasos Papdopoulos while tonight he will attend a joint reception of Turkish-Cypriot and Greek-Cypriot teachers.

[07] Bush urges new Palestinian leader oppose terror, new violence erupts

President George W. Bush demanded today that the Palestinians' new leadership state its opposition to terrorism and dismantle militant groups, a day after twin Palestinian suicide bombings against Israelis. Bush told reporters he still believed in the U.S.-backed peace "road map" envisioning a Palestinian state by 2005 and said "time will tell" whether he can work with new Prime Minister-designate Ahmed Qurie, who is poised to replace Mahmoud Abbas, the U.S. favorite who resigned last week in a power struggle with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

In the meantime, an Israeli warplane narrowly failed to assassinate a Hamas leader but killed his son and a bodyguard in Gaza today, a day after two Palestinian suicide bombers killed 15 people in Israel. The missile strike flattened the two-story home of Mahmoud al-Zahar, co-founder of the militant Islamic group and one of its top political officials, as a new wave of tit-for-tat violence drowned a dying U.S.-backed peace plan in blood. Zahar, standing inside his house when the missile hit sustained only light injuries to his head and back but his wife was seriously hurt.
