    A cloudy day is forecast, with local rain and storms, improving later in the afternoon.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 20 to 27 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 16 to 25 degrees.

    [02] PASOK celebrates 29th anniversary

    Tonight, the ruling Pasok party is celebrating the 29th anniversary of its founding on September 3, 1974. Keynote speaker at the event ' being held at the Panellinio football field in Kypseli ' is the Prime Minister and leader of the socialist party, Costas Simitis, while the Secretary of the party's Central Committee, Michalis Chrysohoidis, will also address the gathering.

    [03] Government and opposition clash on social measures

    The government and opposition parties crossed swords today, following yesterday's announcement by Prime Minister Costas Simitis of a massive package of measures, designed to assist low-income social groups. The package of subsidies, tax breaks and wage increases is estimated to cost some 1.7 billion euros.

    [04] Dialogue on electoral law changes to be re-opened soon

    Dialogue on the controversial issue of radical changes to the electoral law will be re-opened immediately after the International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki this month, Interior Minister Costas Skandalidis said today. He added that the government's proposal would be accompanied by alternative scenarios, in order to facilitate the dialogue.

    [05] OA strike tomorrow to disrupt flight schedules

    Olympic Airways flights to be disrupted tomorrow, due to a 24-hour strike by employees, in protest against a bill streamlining the Greek national air carrier. The unionists charge that the bill does not incorporate government promises involving job security.

    [06] New ring road to relieve traffic congestion in Athens

    A new Athens ring road, around Ymettos which opened to traffic today, is expected to significantly ease congestion on major streets such as Mesoghion and Kifissias avenues. The new road will allow motorists to drive the 13 km distance between Kesariani and Glyka Nera in less than seven minutes.

    American President George W. Bush told the Dutch Prime Minister today that he wanted a greater United Nations role in Iraq ' a major shift in US strategy up to now. Meanwhile, a Polish-led force took command of a chunk of the country from US marines

    [08] Palestinian PM to quit unless granted more powers

    Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas will quit if parliament fails to back him in a power struggle with President Yasser Arafat by granting him new powers to take steps for peace, officials said today.
