    A cloudy day is forecast, with rain and storms in the north of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 22 to 33 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 20 to 29 degrees.

    [02] PM announces package of social measures

    Following a cabinet meeting today, Prime Minister Costas Simitis announced a 1.7 billion euro package of social measures, aimed to boost the incomes of wage earners, pensioners, and farmers, as well as to bolster small and medium-sized businesses. Simitis stressed that the measures facilitated convergence with more developed regions of the European Union, without threatening the stability of the government's fiscal policy

    [03] Opposition leader slams proposed social measures

    New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis described the government's measures as an effort to buy votes, in view of the upcoming general elections, scheduled for spring next year. According to Karamanlis, the Prime Minister had both the time and resources, but was unable to achieve real convergence.

    [04] Unemployment drops, employment increases

    Data released today by the National Statistical Service indicates that unemployment dropped from 9.6 percent to 8.9 percent in the second trimester of this year, while employment increased by 1.7 percent in that period. The statistics showed that unemployment mainly affected women, with a percentage of 13.6, while only 5.7 percent of men were out of work.

    [05] Athens 2004 President "satisfied" with Olympic trial events

    At a press conference today, the President of the Athens 2004 organising committee, Yanna Angelopoulou, said she was completely satisfied with the trial events for next year's Olympic Games. She added that Athens was capable of organixing "magical" games and was working in the very best way towards that aim.

    [06] Australian envoy reassures on negative media reports

    The Australian ambassador to Greece, Stewart Hume, today reassured Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos that negative media reports in Australia about the Athens Olympics were in no way connected to his government's official position. In addition, Hume clarified that a travel advisory, issued by the Australian government, referred generally to numerous countries and was not linked to any security issues linked to the games.

    [07] Cyprus won't block Turkey's EU bid says Cypriot President

    Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos today dismissed suggestions that he might thwart Turkey's bid to join the European Union if Ankara and the Turkish-Cypriots block reunification of his divided island. Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has rejected a United Nations blueprint for reuniting Cyprus, split along ethnic lines since 1974.

    [08] Car bomb kills Iraqi policeman, as top Shi'ite buried

    A car bomb at Baghdad's police headquarters killed an Iraqi police officer today and wounded about 15 others, in a suspected attempt to assassinate the police chief ' a key ally of the US-led occupying forces. The blast went off as more than 100,000 mourners packed into the holy city of Najaf for the funeral of a top Shi'ite cleric, slain in the deadliest attack in postwar Iraq.

    [09] Israeli defence minister wants Arafat expelled soon

    Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said today that he favoured expelling Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, possibly by the end of the year, because he was obstructing US-led peace moves. Mofaz has called several times for Arafat to be expelled, but Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has overruled him, fearing an international backlash.
