 2004 Olympics will be safe pledges PMGreece will be ready and safe for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, pledged Prime Minister Costas Simitis today, during an inspection of Olympic projects in the capital's coastal suburbs. Accompanied by the ministers of Culture and Public Works, as well as the President of the Athens 2004 organising committee, Simitis visited the Olympic beach volley and sailing centres.

 Earthquake aid paid to Lefkada residents, as normalcy returnsInhabitants of Lefkada are gradually resuming their daily routines, following last week's 6.4-Richter earthquake, and preliminary aid of 600 euros is already being distributed to those whose homes were damaged by the tremor. Further inspections of damaged premises will take place on Thursday, in order that the sum of 6,000 euros can be paid to homeowners towards the necessary repairs.

 British tourist remanded in custody for murder in RhodesA 21-year-old British tourist ' arrested for the murder of another young Briton ' was remanded in custody today, pending trial, on the island of Rhodes, while five of their compatriots were released on bail. Mark Navaro was charged with the killing of 17-year-old Paddy Doran, whom he allegedly stabbed with a broken bottle, during a drunken brawl at a nightclub on the island last week.

 Public enquiry call after US troops kill Reuters cameramanWorld media bodies demanded a public enquiry today into the killing by US troops of a Reuters television cameraman, the second journalist from the international news agency to be killed in Iraq in four months. Washington was urged to investigate how a soldier apparently mistook Mazen Dana's camera for a grenade launcher yesterday.
