 Weather forecastÏn Monday, sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country with local clouds forming in the afternoon hours in the north east with a possibility of showers. Winds will be light in the west, turning strong to very strong in the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens between 24C and 36C; and in Thessaloniki from 22C to 35C.

 Heavy traffic as summer vacationers return to citySummer holiday travelers returning to the city are experiencing heavy traffic in the city as a result of the international cycling championship trials taking place within the framework of the preparations for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Vehicular traffic and parking will be prohibited in most city center streets until 9 PM.
In the meantime, heavy traffic is also being reported on the Athens-Corinth national road near Kakia Skala. Traffic police is adding an extra traffic lane to facilitate travelers returning to the city, while trucks over 1.5 tons are prohibited from traveling on the national road. In addition, two helicopters are also monitoring both national roads.

 Prime Minister Simitis Monday agendaPrime Minister Simitis will begin a series of meetings tomorrow following his return from the island of Sifnos today after a short summer break. The Prime Minister will visit the Beach Volley Olympic Center within the framework of the Olympics preparations as well as the Olympic Sailing Center in Agios Kosmas.
Mr. Simitis will later meet at the Maximos Mansion with the coordinator of the International Olympics Committee, Denis Oswald, the Minister of Culture, Evangelos Venizelos and the president of the Athens 2004 Olympics Organizing Committee, Gianna Angelopoulou

 Medals for Greeks canoe-kayak athletesAndreas Kalingaridis won two medals at the International Canoe/Kayak competition that was held at the Schnias Olympic Rowing Center, finishing in first place in the one thousand-meter race and the silver medal in the 500-meter race. In addition, Athena Alexopoulou, Lina Tserga, Eleni Spiropoulou and Eleftheria Patrelaki won the silver medal in the four-seat 500-meter kayak competition.

 Assistance for earthquake victims in LefkadaEarthquake victims in Lefkada will begin receiving the sum of 600 euro in assistance tomorrow while those left homeless as a result of the recent quake will receive six thousand euro once damages to their homes has been assessed. In addition, individuals whose homes were completely destroyed will receive a 30% free subsidized bank loan as well as a 15-year interest free loan.

 Israeli groundwork for West Bank cities handoverIsrael said today the Palestinian Authority had boosted efforts to rein in militants, laying the groundwork for an Israeli handover of four West Bank cities in a bid to salvage a fraying ceasefire. Israeli and Palestinian officers were to meet later today to work out details of the transfer this week of Jericho and Qalqilya, followed by pullbacks later this month from Tulkarm and Ramallah, the seat of Palestinian government.
