In Athens temperatures will range between 24 C to 40 C and in Thessaloniki between 22 C to 38 C.(4/7/2003 2:03:00 μμ) [02] Hrisohoidis General secretary, elected by overwhelming majorityPublic Order Minister, Mihalis Hrisohoidis was yesterday elected the new General Secretary of the ruling Pasok party. The only candidate for the post, he was elected by an overwhelming majority, replacing Kostas Laliotis who had been asked to resign by Prime-minister Simitis .Among members elected for the Executive Office are Apostolos Kaklamanis, Fofi Genimata, Milena Apostolaki, Tonia Antoniou, Kostas Geitonas and Giorgos Panagiotakopoulos. Hrisohoidis expressed satisfaction at the number of votes he gathered and committed himself to working hard for a substantial renewal of the party with respect to its past which will lead to victory in the forthcoming national elections. The initiative is part of a general shake up promised by Prime-minister Simitis once his term as EU President ended. In a lengthy speech yesterday, Simitis said there would be a radical renewal of positions and policies focused on a single goal 'winning the polls. Simitis also announced that a real social cohesion chart will be announced in September.It will consist the basis of the Pasok party pre-election campaign aimed at increasing low incomes, reducing cost of living and strengthen medium size businesses. In another part of his speech he accused the main opposition N.D party of scandal mongering and groundless promises. Outgoing General Secretary, Kostas Laliotis rejected Prime-minister Simitis proposal for his return to the government underlining that he did not consider himself as an obstacle to the ruling Pasok party renewal and course to victory in the national elections. He also hinted at being undermined by senior officials who he refused to name. However, Laliotis spoke of political and non political circles- topped by American ambassador to Athens Tomas Miller who orchestrated a strong criticism, accusing him of cultivating an anti American climate during the U.S led war on Iraq. Commenting on the latest developments, the N.D party repeated it call for early elections while the President of the Coalition party, Nikos Konstantopoulos underlined that the Pasok party was going through an identity and policy crisis.
