Stressing that concentration should be placed on next year s national elections, with the focus on a single goal, winning the polls, Simitis said members of the Executive Office must have free time and free hands to prepare for elections and the cabinet ministers must have free hands and no extra burdens to promote the government s work.Simtis asked long-term minister and current party General Secretary, Kostas Laliotis to return to the government, after almost two years of absence but he chose to remain outside the government, adding that he would also resign from the Pasok party Central Committee and would not be a candidate in the 2ND Pireus district. Senior ruling Pasok party officials stressed the need for both initiatives and party unity while Foreign Minister, George Papandreou spoke of a new beginning and collectivity for victory. The focus of interest today lies on the meeting of the Pasok party Central Committee to elect a new General Secretary under the shadow of Laliotis resignation. According to all indications, the only candidate for the post is, Public Order Minister, Mihalis Hrisohoidis Commenting on the latest developments, the N.D party insisted on early elections claiming that Greek people could no longer put up with deadlocks created by the ruling Pasok party, while the Coalition of the Left and Progrees party spoke of a deep crisis in the policies and cohesion within the ruling party.. In the meantime, according to late polls conducted by METRON ANALYSIS, the N.D party comes 8% ahead of the Pasok party but with Prime-minister Simitis coming 1,8% ahead of the N.D party leader, Kostas Karamanlis in peoples preference for the post of Prime-minister. People particularly the youth and the elderly are advised to stay indoors, avoid heavy work and alcohol and drnk plenty of fluids.The management of the State power supplier DEH assured that there was no danger of a major power cut today despite today s 24 hour strike by DEH employees. (3/7/2003 1:09:00 μμ) [04] Greece objects to U.S use of name MacedoniaForeign Minister George Papandreou, in a letter to his American counterpart, Collin Powell , expressed Greece s objection to the use of the name Macedonia- whose provisional name is FYROM- in a US –Skopyie bilateral agreement providing for the exemption of U.S personnel from prosecution by the International Criminal Court.Responding to Greece s reaction , the American State Department said that the use of the name Macedonia is an informal name that's been used in the agreement , and not a change of recognition , adding that the U.S sponsored UN talks between the two countries to settle the dispute over the name. The N.D party has accused the government of inactivity, allowing Skopyie to promote its positions on the issue of its name.
