  • [01] Weather forecast

    A fine and hot day is forecast with local showers and storms in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Winds north, northwesterly, moderate. Temperatures in Athens will range between 34 C to 36 C and in Thessaloniki between 22 C to 33 C.

    Meteorologists forecast a hot week with temperatures rising over 40 C from Wednesday till Saturday and in some parts of southern Greece even reaching 42 C. Health services are in a state of readiness to deal with any emergencies and if necessary the Xenocratis plan will be implemented

    The Municipality of Athens today announced that air-conditioned rooms will be open to the public till 8 p.m.

    [02] Prime-minister Simitis reviews Greek EU Presidency results

    Prime-minister Simitis will tomorrow present the results of Greece s E.U Presidency to the EU Parliament in Stransbourg.

    Today he will brief the President of the Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos and later chair a cabinet meeting. This week the Prime-minister is expected to take initiatives involving a cabinet reshuffle plus any other changes he may deem necessary in the ruling Pasok party and the political system.

    [03] N.D party repeats call for early elections

    Addressing a rally of N.D supporters in Larissa, opposition leader Kostas Karamanlis once again repeated his call for early elections. He described the government as tired and his ministers disappointed that their party is no longer supported by the people.

    In response, government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said the government understood Karamanlis anxiety as his call made no impact on the people. He repeated that national elections would take place as scheduled at the end of the government s 4 year term in spring 2004.

    Presenting yesterday the ND party s program on the sector of agriculture, its President, Kostas Karamnlis said that restructuring and renaming of the Agriculture Ministry to Agricultural Development and Food Ministry, final regulation of farmers debts and taxation measures to boost the purchase of farm land are included in the ND party s program for agricultural development

    In response, an announcement of the Agriculture Ministry says that the ND party program is merely a replica of the actions and measures provided by the 3rd Community support framework, already materialised by the government.

    [04] Deadline for submission of documents for residence permits expires today

    The prefectures of Athens and Pireus remained open at the week-end to facilitate immigrants as the deadline for the submission of documents for the issue of residence permits expires today .

    [05] Israeli forces pull back from Gaza Strip

    Israeli forces late last night concluded withdrawal from the Gaza Strip within the context of the 3-month agreement with the Palestinian authority for suspension of military operations.

    Earlier Hamas and Islamic Jihad said that the ceaefire was conditional on a total cessation of all forms of Israeli aggression and liberation of Palestinian prisoners.

    Israel called the cease-fire an empty tactic aimed at giving militant groups breathing room in view of a U.S diplomatic drive against them and Israeli attacks on their senior members.

    [06] U.S forces operation in Iraq &#8211; at least 60 detained

    According to an announcement of the Pentagon at least 60 people were detained during a U.S forces operation to crack down on armed resistance blamed on die-hard supporters of the toppled Iraqui leader Saddam Housein.

    [07] Iran denies non-scheduled U.N inspections

    During his meeting with his British counterpart Jack Straw, Iranian Foreign Minister repeated Iran s denial to allow non-scheduled U.N inspections of its nuclear sites for as long as the West does not cooperate.
