    A cloudy and rainy day is forecast for most parts of the country with heavy storms in the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete. Winds variable, light to moderate turning strong locally in the Aegean. Weather will start improving from late afternoon. Temperatures in Athens will range between 16 C to 23 C and in Thessaloniki between 15 C and 22 C.

    [02] Meetings at Labor ministry

    Successive meetings are being held at the Labor Ministry to find a solution in order to secure job positions in businesses with financial difficulties while according to a court ruling, the lay off of 220 employees of the Softex, paper company is illegal.

    In the meantime, political confrontation between the ruling Pasok party and the major opposition ND party continues, with Prime-minister Simitis accusing the conservative party of cooperating with vested interests to hamper the government s work. The ND party spokesman said that the government was in a state of confusion and panic , stressing that the problem of the economy was political and could only be solved by a government of the ND party. In response, the government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said that the ND party has no proposals to make since its program coincides with the most radical conservative views of the business circles

    [03] Strict fines to enforce anti-smoking measures

    The Ministry of Health has decided to impose strict fines starting from 150 euros and even a prison sentence to enforce anti-smoking measures in public places .

    [04] Prime-minister Simitis meets with Canadian Prime-minister

    Closer EU-Canada relations was the focus of talks in Athens between Greek Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis and his Canadian counterpart, Zan Kretien at the presence of EU Commission President , Romano Prodi.

    Simitis called on Canadian businesses to invest in Greece with the aim to expand in the markets of the broader region. The Canadian Prime-minister congratulated Simitis for his strong efforts in the economic sector.

    In the meantime, an agreement was reached on the UN role in the reconstruction of post war Iraq and the road map on peace in the ME during an earlier meeting of the EU troika with the Canadian Prime-minister .

    During a meeting of Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis with Canada s Foreign Trade Minister and EU Commissioner for foreign trade it was agreed that two significant Greek products, ouzo and retsina will be protected in Canada, with Canadian producers banned from using the Greek names.
