[02] Bomb attacks in Casablanca kill 39

At least 39 people have been killed and 70 injured in a series of bomb attacks in Morocco's largest city Casablanca.

Five explosions - at least three of them car bombs - occurred within 30 minutes at locations near the centre of the city, according to the authorities.

Interior Minister Mustapha Sahel said the attacks "bear the hallmark of international terrorism", adding that 10 suicide bombers were among those killed.

The authorities have left open the possibility for the attacks to have been carried out by the Al Qaeda network.

The targets of the bomb attacks were the Belgian consulate, a Jewish club, the luxurious hotel Sapher and the Spanish club Casa de Espania.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Office has warned British nationals to avoid travelling to Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti. Additionally, all British flights to Kenya have been banned for fear of terrorist attacks.

[04] Turkey must respect international law says Papandreou

Prime Minister Costas Simitis called on his ministers yesterday to stop all discussions about a government reshuffle, stressing that the top priority is the boosting of the government programme.

Foreign Minister George Papandreou briefed the Prime Minister on his trip to Brussels and his meeting with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul to whom he raised the issue of the violation of the Greek FIR by Turkish war planes.

Mr Papandreou underlined that Turkey should show respect to International Law and the principle of good neighbourliness, criteria demanded to be met by future EU member countries.

Finally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected publications of the Turkish Press, according to which Messrs Papandreou and Gul agreed to lift the embargo in Cyprus.

[05] Corruption causes loss of huge amounts of funds says Karamanlis

Referring to the management of the Second and Third Community Support Framework, New Democracy President Costas Karamanlis accused the government of having allowed corruption to result in the waste of huge amounts of money.

From his side, Press spokesman Christos Protopapas accused the ND President of populism and the creation of a prolonged pre electoral climate.

Meanwhile, during the informal EU Finance Ministers meeting held in Chalkidiki Commissioner Michel Barnier appeared satisfied with the management of the Third Community Support Framework.

He pointed out that the funds of the Second Community Support Framework that were not absorbed do not exceed 3%, while with other member states that percentage even reached 10%.
