[03] Annan to present revised plan on Cyprus issue

The United Nations General Secretary Kofi Annan, who is expected in Athens today, will present Prime Minister Costas Simitis with a revised plan for the solution of the Cyprus issue.

Mr Anan referred to a revised plan that would try to delete the worries of both sides.

In an interview with the Greek newspaper To Vima and with CNN Turk, Mr Annan said that if a solution was not reached, that would be a tragedy, adding that the Turkish Cypriots would not have another chance to enter the European Union.

Meanwhile, during their meeting yesterday, the newly elected President of the Cyprus Republic Tasos Papadopoulos and Prime Minister Costas Simitis concluded that even if an extension of time was given until March 30, a solution of the Cyprus issue would not be easy to be reached due to the Turkish Cypriots' intransigence.

From his side, Mr Papadopoulos stated that the safest way for the European Union not to inherit the Cyprus problem would be a viable and operational solution, underlining that he did not intend to ask for the basic principles of Mr Annan's plan to be changed.

Mr Papadopoulos will meet Foreign Minister George Papandreou today.
