Winds northerly moderate in the west and easterly very strong to gale force in the Aegean. In Athens temperatures will range between 1C to 6C and in Thessaloniki between –3C to 5C(24/2/2003 11:09:00 ðì) [02] Extensive damages due to bad weatherSnow is still falling in many parts of the country intensifying the problems caused by the successive waves of bad weather hitting the country for the past few weeks. The weather bureau expects conditions to begin improving on Wednesday.Tens of villages are still cut off while traffic has been disrupted at 19 major points of national and provincial roads in central Greece and the Peloponese due to heavy snow, landslides and large rifts in the asphalt. Eight municipalities on the island of Evia have been declared in a state of emergency. Extensive damage caused by recent floods on the islands of Naxos, Paros, Tinos, and Syros is presently being assesed by a special government team, headed by Interior Minister, Kostas Scandalidis. The inner cabinet will meet this week to assess damages and speed up compensation procedures. There is a ban on coastal shipping due to gale force winds. (24/2/2003 11:09:00 ðì) [03] Fourteen killed in bus crashA bus plunged off a bridge in northern Greece yesterday, killing 14 passengers, injuring 8 others and leaving a 3 year-old child missing.The Athens- bound bus crashed through double barriers and fell some 10 meters into the Aliakmon river. Rescue workers and police rushed to the scene and tried to lift passengers out of the bus . The search for the 3-year old child continues. According to a forensic test on the body of the driver there are not indications of health problems to explain the loss of control of the bus . (24/2/2003 11:10:00 ðì) [04] Newly elected Cyprus President visits AthensThe newly elected President of Cyprus Tasos Papadopoulos is in Athens for contacts with the political leadership.He said that the UN Secretary has not submitted a revised peace blueprint and stressed that the Cyprus political problem has not been resolved yet due to the intransigence of Turkish-Cypriot leader Raulf Dektash.In the meantime UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan upon his arrival in Ancara yesterday- the first stop of his shuttle tour of Ancara, Athens and Nicosia- appeared confident that a deal was possible .UN Secretary General urged Turkey, Greece and the two sides of Cyprus to seize the chance to unite the Mediterranean island before a February deadline passes. Annan is expected to visit Athens tomorrow and Nicosia on Wednesday.
