[02] Iraq running out of time

With American President George W. Bush's ultimatum to Iraq yesterday, war preparations are being intensified in the Persian Gulf.

Following his meeting with the British Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday, Mr Bush described the Iraqi President Saddam Husein a threat towards mankind, adding that Iraq's disarming will take place within a few weeks. Mr Bush also stated that although a second decision of the Security Council was welcome, it was not necessary.

From his side, Mr Blair stated that the Iraqi President was running out of time.

At the same time, United Nations inspectors announced that they would expect from Iraq to allow the unconditional flights of reconnaissance planes and personal interviews with scientists before they visit Bagdad on February 7 or 8.

Meanwhile, Iraq has asked to be represented by a high rank official at the United Nations Security Council meeting next Wednesday. During this meeting American Secretary of State Colin Powell is expected to present proof that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction.

On a relative development, reactions against the eight European nations that decided to back the American initiative against Iraq continue. The Commission announced that that decision does not reflect Europe's policy.

From his side, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stated that the eight European leaders' decision proved that they lacked mutual understanding and briefing, adding that he did not rule out the possibility of an extraordinary summit meeting to take place.

Finally, the decision of the eight European states to back the United States military initiative against Iraq will be discussed between Mr Simitis and Foreign Minister George Papandreou today, while the later will brief the prime minister on his contacts with the Turkish leadership.
