[02] Greek-EU Presidency stance on Iraq

While American President George Bush is preparing a possible strike against Iraq, Greece which holds the EU rotating Presidency is continuing efforts for a peaceful settlement of the Iraqi crisis. Prime-minister Simitis had telephone contacts with his British and Italian counterparts, Tony Blair and Sylvio Berlusconi in view of their upcoming meeting with the American President. Simitis left open the possibility of visiting the US prior to his scheduled meeting with the American President in June.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister George Papandreou said yesterday he was sceptical that imposing democracy on Iraq would solve the current crisis. He clarified that

A sudden regime change-as demanded by the U.S –could set off other problems including a rise in religious fundamentalism both in Iraq and neighbouring states.

On Sunday Papandreou will begin a EU mission to 4 ME states to try to avert a war in Iraq and urge Arab nations to play a bigger role in mediating between Washingthon and Bagdad. Also 32 EU deputies will visit Bagdad within the framework of a peace initiative.
