From his side, Deputy Education Minister Nikos Gesoulis stated to NET 105.8 radio station that the ministry would examine the proposals of the Pedagogical Institute and would take the final decisions. (22/1/2003 10:49:00 ðì) [05] ECOFIN approves Greece's stability programmeAn ECOFIN meeting in Brussels on Tuesday approved Greece's update stability and development programme for the period 2002-2006.Commenting the council's decision, Greek Economy and Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis - who chaired the meeting - said that ''everyone acknowledged the very significant progress made in the Greek economy and particularly its high growth rates.'' The Greek minister stressed that ''for this reason, the council insisted that the same policy should be continued in the coming years giving more emphasis to a reduction of public debt, economic growth, increased competitiveness and new jobs.'' Christodoulakis said that council's decision was equally significant for the promotion of structural reforms in the economy. Meanwhile, the EU Finance Commission decided that penalties should be inflicted to Germany for its excessive fiscal deficit and at the same time warmed France on the same issue. Finally, the New Democracy party criticized the government for its economic policy stating that the government cannot get rid of big interests and dependences. (22/1/2003 10:50:00 ðì) [06] No influenza epidemic broken out in GreeceCommenting on the statements of European scientists on influenza, epidemiologist Marios Lazanas of the Research Centre of Special Infections stated that an influenza epidemic had not broken out in Greece.In a Press Conference that took place in Rotterdam, it was stressed that the repercussions of influenza on certain patients had been serious, while it was stressed that each annual outbreak of this illness causes a considerable increase of health expenses.
